Yes. He wrote very nice review about my book here. Frankly speaking I am not big enthusiast such style of writing where author of review (his emotions, likes) is the main topic but I respect Frans, what he did in music (in 80s and 90s mainly) and in writing about music.

I think what this has been called for long time is "Jaded Weekly".
What exactly is "Vital" in it, is hard to say, but one can respect that someone actually has made almost lifes mission to write about experimental music. While people come and go, bands start and stop, Vital Weekly remains...   But is it vital anymore?

No. Two old geezers suffering from overload who can't get it up for music anymore.

Was it ever? I always found it totally useless though I haven't been around long.

Johann

yea, vitals reviews are super awful....

Andrew McIntosh

Hmmm...

Reading it, the reviews don't seem too awful to me at all. In fact, they seem pretty straight forward and informed. In fact, they seem very readable (more than one or two I've noticed in S.I. and other sources). What's more, I really like the minimal, straight-up-information layout.

I'm not trying to be contrary for it's own sake (and I still think Jilat's a fuck-wit), but Vital Weekly doesn't strike me as deserving all the opprobrium. A regular, reliable review digest and podcast - seems pretty reasonable to me.

I think two reasons of reviews that are felt bad are:
1) Anything to do with Jliat
2) FdW getting something of noise or power electronics, which he most often doesn't appear to want to deal with.

FdW getting what he likes or someone else doing reviews, no problem..

haha 'About 162 results' :D

I only read it for the jliat reviews

I like Vital, I like the fact that it has been going since 1987. I don't read all the reviews, just a quick browse now and then to see what has been released and who is still active. Frans is a busy man with his writings and releases and performances etc .. cut the guy some slack!

Unfortunately, many people who had or have any connection with so called circle of industrial music think the same about power electronics and noise. Lately I read interesting interview with LUSTMORD (besides I had strange private conversation with him about my book and entry about his activities in that book) where this man is very critical to these genres. William Bennett, P. Best, Konstruktivists, Vivenza and many, many more "oldies" don't care about noise and power electronics. Sometimes I think that our circle is something like secta, much more bigger than in the 80s.

Yes, there are certainly MUCH worse review columns/publications in existence, and I think that at least most of the writers for Vital Weekly write thoughtful and concise information regarding releases. Michael Tau is a reviewer that writes for Vital who's reviews I enjoy. He also wrote this interesting article about MSBR:
