McMARIAN was started as a studio project in 1986 by Marcin Bednarski and Piotr Kalinowski. They were occasionally assisted by OJCIEC WAHEHE (of WAHEHE), FRANZ DREADHUNTER (ex DÜPĄ) and PREZES (of ID). As much as it developed the art concepts of the group WAHEHE (of which Bednarski was a major member), it put forward a completely different aesthetic quality of music. While WAHEHE explored the industrial avant-garde of rock music, both ideologically and musically, McMARIAN dropped the rock tradition and its rebellious platform entirely. Instead, it focused on electronics and the new vistas and possibilities it opened, still fascinated with industrial music's primary ideas: antimusic and an unconventional use of synthesizers. Its main instruments were two analogue synthesizers designed by Kalinowski himself (one consisting of a sequencer, noise generator and a drum machine) and pre-recorded tapes of looped idiosyncratic electroacoustic textures. Their works relied on irregular rhythms of rough sound, often morphing into a sonic cacophony that overpowers snippets of conversations, radio and TV programmes or radio plays for children. This was complemented by an oneiric atmosphere, full of surreal contrasts and Dadaistic absurdities, accentuated by Kalinowski's collage artworks, which have never been published before and several of which are included on this release. Terminated in 1989, the project left very little output. (translation: Przemysław Chojnacki)

A solo act by William CHRISTMAN, an American performance artist and the owner of a small record label called TURBINE CASSETTES. He debuted in 1989 with a cassette release entitled Austere. With the use of a computer, guitar, tape delay and tapes, he managed to create a loop-collage work based on excerpts from mosaic industrial structures. His next ... Zobacz więcejcompositions, published on various compilations, were in a similar vein. His 1991 Japan tour alongside many prominent local artists (e.g. The GEROGERIGEGEGE, NIHILIST SURFIN' GROUP) and the British dancer Shelley HOLLINGSWORTH turned out to be a great success. The performances consisted of extreme industrial noise forms and theatrical acts of self-mutilation and sado-masochism. From 1994 to 1998 ANAL SADIST, AMK, The HATERS and Les SCURRY, often accompanied by Japanese artists (e.g. HIJOKAIDAN, MERZBOW, MASONNA) played numerous and successful shows. During that period he recorded some material with a view to it being released as a full length CD, but it, unfortunately, never materialised due to the project's abrupt demise in 1998. CHRISTMAN's frequent juxtaposition of music with para-theatrical performances was an equivalent of a dichotomy between visual and audible realities. The noise was both an embodiment of contemporary civilisation with its tendency towards rationalisation and an effect of the clash of two different planes of existence. Inspired by John CAGE, Karlheinz STOCKHAUSEN, Edgar VARÈSE, Morton SUBOTNICK, Fred FRITH, MERZBOW and other Japanese noise artists, ANAL SADIST managed to come up with his own style of industrial. Despite its quantitatively unimpressive catalogue, it is considered one of the most prominent representatives of American industrial culture of the 1990s.
