C10s, C7s, "Cassingle"

OK, so, figured we needed this as a relative to the 7" appreciation topic. I've realized people are pretty divided when it comes to short tapes. However, I'm pretty much in agreement with both sides- sometimes it's frustratingly pointless (PE project doing a C10 is just a cocktease) and others it's totally appropriate (tape equivalent of a 7" or whatever).

But I generally really like them, unless it's a project that seems to mostly stick to C10s (a sign of weak conceptualization/composition skills IMHO) or the like. For those that don't mind releases on recycled tapes (certainly not me), I love recording short stuff over sealed "cassingles" you find at the thrift store or flea market.

David Jackman "Ritual"

(obviously I don't actually own this, just MP3s, but thought it looked really good nonetheless)

Weak Sisters "One Way Doors"

I think this one being a really good mix of cut-up electronics and cut-up (in a different sense of the word) field recordings/tape manipulations is perfect for the really short cassette.

Just the sounds of pissing, a little synth, and a little reverb (maybe even acoustic from the bathroom)! How long does that need to be?

Post some good examples of really short releases (don't even have to be tapes) that you like, and why you think they're justified.

Pedestrian Deposit - Eternal

I'm not completely sure why but this c10 is my favorite release by J Borges. Both sides are complete ideas on their own and the pacing is what I would idealize for ambient to harsh ratio. Packaging is also quite beautiful. He has done a lot of c10s around the same time that I also prefer over the albums, but from what I heard this is the best one.

Daniel Menche - Ram Horns (biz card cdr)

The only thing I got from the Banned Production biz card series, but certainly my favorite for Menche. I have a few other Menche but maybe my attention span is bad, but in the 5 minutes is immediately powerful low end repeating to a almost hardcore techno banging without any hint of a drum

Often my most dreaded format, even though I love most 7"s. Not sure what the mental block is. It may just be financial...as there's obviously a hefty price difference between 12" and 7", while a lot of folks seem to charge essentially the same for C10 to C60+.

Some thoughts on recent acquisitions:

Constrain - Default Trade 2xC10 (Compulsion Rites): Double cassingle? It's becoming more and more obvious over time that many labels/artists embrace the double-tape EP simply for aesthetics; the opportunity to go all-out with packaging. If you've held this item, I think that's the whole point. C20 seems the ultimate harsh noise format to me, and this would clearly have fit. Anyway, Constrain is one of the best rip-roaring, big-flying-fuck-you-experimentalism harsh noisers in the USA - up there with Being, Wrong Hole, etc. Each newbie is just that little tweak better. This being his newest - so I believe - should tell you just what I think of it. ... His C12 (the 8" EP of cassettes?) Zero Action on Mazurka also delivers, but the above is just a hair improved.

V/A - Summer Scum Harsh Noise C10 (New Forces): Just as the title would suggest, cassingle compilation (!) of harsh noise for this year's fest. Ahlzagailzehguh, penetrating with the most impressive piece. Of course, it's outrageously chopped, but without any of the over-the-top contrast of certain cutters. Brad Griggs, probably the most lackluster of the bunch; just kinda steady screech, but just fine regardless. Okay side-B already: Breaking The Will, with a totally dynamic piece; conjuring up three disparate feels in about two minutes and somehow the track still seems full-length. Wild. Developer, using the first half of his track for an-almost-nothing-hum-and-clang moment before just ripping into 60-seconds of high-gain, then rhythmic-ish slices. The way I like him!

Window - Salvation C11 (Fallow Field): Only going off a web-rip on this one, but the case would seem to be a mini library-bound affair. Trying to meet SSP halfway on unnecessary shelf-display-rights, eh? Fairly predictable beat-based industrial PE, that flirts with Posh Isolation/Galakthorrö sonic motifs, while incorporating black metal/punk vocals. Really don't like the cross pollination of these sounds. ~11 minutes is more than enough of this for me. Was available through Youth Attack...so, statistically this should be one of the biggest things out there today.

Purity Of Essence - Kulturkammer C10 (Unseen Force): The übermensch cover is highly appropriate on this goodie. Quasi-martial backbone holds itself dominant while a cascading, crunchy loop(?) comes in and out allowing some distant vocals(?) and dreary synth to occasionally peak out. A few moments where the feedback's a lil too invasive though. But, what I do like is the way some harsh rumble corrodes it only to end all fuck-you like in an instant. Flip the tape and, woah!, just where we left off. Like some live edition of Dopesmoker on vinyl or something. Things wax and wane before a sheet-metal-down-the-hall bit is overpowered by a feedback torture session. Too much of this in my life now. I just get migraines, so I can't really comment on the rest.

Scant - Not Guilty By Reason Of Mental Disease Or Defect C10-12? (Beyond The Ruins): Had the pleasure of seeing Scant last night. Sick, sick performance. Short, sweet and executed so well. Tape rumbles out like Anenzephalia or Ke/Hil live; you expect this sort of calming drone, but there's grit that makes it more oppressive. A filthy PA hum enters and leads you to the flip. Again, thoughts of those good ol' German boys. Pulsating, dense loop careens around your skull before letting up short of halfway to make room for a wee silence. The rhythm reappears in an explosive decay that veers near The Rita territory, but wanes again. Killer!

EDIT: Although not noise, I feel the need to also mention my forever-confusion/-joy of receiving the Insect Warfare/The Kill C1 (yes...) where each track repeats twice on their respective side.

Thank you for the quote Mr. Peterson ;)

I think it's fine if it works for the particular material. I don't understand the wholesale rejection of the "c10," especially when people like the material and think it's presented well.

That said, I do think it's disappointing when a c10 has some great material that isn't fully realized, or when the format is limiting the artist or holding them back. But I don't think everything has to be long-form. Those earlier Pedestrian Deposit c10's are a perfect example. All of those tapes (Restraint, Morose, Come-Hither...) feel like fully realized, carefully crafted noise compositions that cover a great deal of terrain and a satisfying manner, despite being only a c10. They work well as presented.

Only if they're as good as CCCC or Hijokaidan.

A c10 seems dumb but a  7" is basically the same length (for the most part). Still, I think I'd rather do a c20 than a c10. I don't think I've ever recorded two five minutes pieces & thought they'd be great for a tape release.

I may consider that in the future. Maybe a series of c10's limited to 20 copies each & the buyer must subscribe to the series in advance. Each subscriber gets original artwork that is inscribed with vulgarities along with other odds n' ends...

I like C10s. Like 7"s if the material on 'em is hit stuff, i'm willing to pay the same price as I would for a cassette album. just give me quality!

I really enjoyed all the C10s that Shallow Waters did from '06-'08, especially IV and V. monotonous, left-wing power electronics with utterly defeated sounding vocals.

Hospital and Monorail Trespassing have both put out a lot of C10s over the years. artists like Alberich, Pedestrian Deposit and FFH seem to really take advantage of the format, providing some of their most immediately satisfying material. especially Alberich, Penis Womb and Of Man, Of Genius are both excellent.

and another C10 that jumps to my mind is Iconoclasm's Statement tape. it's got some nice but annoying oversized packaging, but it's nasty p.e./harsh noise in the more modern Japanese style. good shit.

I was going to bring up the Shallow Waters tapes too. Concise and riveting, and perfect for really concentrated listening. (I'm still looking for tapes III and V, if anyone has them for trade/sale PM me).

On the opposite end of the political spectrum, I love the two k.ock.chok.er tapes on Total Fucking Filth. Rough anonymous PE, each on a single-sided C10, with an in-your-face vocal attack, with lyrics ranging from explicit sexual degradation to racist violence, in the grand old offensive tradition of Whitehouse et al.

I'd certainly subscribe, Keeth.

All short, 1-sided tapes on that label (or most). I've only heard of Albert Fish is My Hero. Would love to hear k.ock.chok.er...

Hopefully, next year I'll break down & buy a tape deck so I can actually listen to tapes & do some releases. I've had a few ideas for too long that need to get done. The c10 series I thought of as I was typing.

Yes! Both the kockchoker tapes are excellent. Also, I'm digging the C10 series idea. Please pursue!
