Frederikke Hoffmeier

Haven't found a thread that deals explicitly with the works of Ms. Hoffmeier, though please close this if it does exist. What is everyone's thoughts on the works of Hoffmeier over the past few years. In my estimation, she's on of the most forward thinking minds in PE/industrial and even avant-garde electronics. While her discography is not perfect (I dislike Ultimate Hypocrisy and Piss Flowers to be entirely honest, though even those works have their moments) when she succeeds, it's like nothing I've heard before - namely, The Great Panic and The Viewer. Her collaborations are quite ace, too. Also, I think it is worth noting that her control over her gear and the way she's able to "make them sing" without the usage of too many prerecorded sounds and so forth is nothing sort of cut throat discipline.

The Piss Flowers cassette was actually my first exposure to noise. I got it when it first came out because the description sounded cool but fuck, I could not understand for the longest time who this shit was made for once I heard it and marveled at the possibility that shit like it had an audience. I tried for so long to sell it but no one bought it.

It finally, months later, made sense when I listened to it for like the tenth time (I tried very hard to understand the appeal of crumbling feedback). I worked my way through shit like Hair Police and Whitehouse but then when the Puce Mary/LR lp came out, along with the Dubrovnik and LR lp's, I really embraced it. She's evolved with almost every release and, while I admittedly haven't really spent too much time with her newer releases, she remains a favorite of mine and my first love in noise/pe.
I think The Closed Room is still my favorite release she's been involved with. I remember when the only info on Puce Mary was a very drab picture taken from outside of a bedroom of her sitting on a mattress on the floor. Now she's one of the flagship acts of the Posh roster.
I appreciate Piss Flowers for the role it played in my life but it is pretty shitty lol

It seems like Freak Animal's releases are only exceptions . Mostly stuff appears to have too little pressing compared to demand. I hope to keep items available as long as possible. "Great Panic" belong to my favorites of her work. "Ultimate Hypocrisy" isn't perhaps as good, but I think the utterly suffocated and lo-fi sound of that recording gives it so different aura that it's very good especially for being different.

700 copies of "Persona" LP appears pretty high number, but is already sold out from label. It would still indicate doing just 100 or so tapes is way to small edition. Managed to get "Fear And Pleasure" recently. Still missing at least Puce Mary / Rodger Stella.

I believe she did electronics on it. Frankly, I'm nearly entirely uninterested in new Marching Church material. Way too much new Sacred Bones-style seems to be infecting the material. Plushy Tom Waits meets goth meets "this used to be a blackend punk project but then I grew up." But, hey, maybe I'll be proved wrong.

"The Great Panic" is indeed very good, Mikko - fits in with FA in a way that, say, I don't think Persona would, but maybe that is splitting hairs. The Roger Stella collab is quite, quite good if I may say so.

Excited to see what's next in her releases. Perhaps that new LR/PM album will drop soon.

Well seeing as though this thread has been started, it is a good as time as any to announce that Frederikke has contributed an excellent long form an in-depth Puce Mary interview for the next issue of noise receptor journal, which makes for rather excellent reading.  Frederikke is currently finalising a couple of follow up questions, with the magazine scheduled to be out in late May. 

Frederikke has also been known to frequent this forum as a lurker, so not sure if she has spotted this thread and is watching with interest!?

Ultimate Hypocrisy has been a consistent grower since I first heard it. I've been in and out of my favoring PM, but I think that's just not having the "right mood". I definitely stand by these FA tapes for their filthiness, versus the rather clean approach the last two LPs had.

Loved her set at M.A.P.S.; a major highlight of that long night. One of those rare occasions where an artist is trying to present a strong aura and does it very well. Hope it won't be my last time.

I think my fave is 'success', and that Rodger Stella collab tape which came out recently is really good as well.
Only seen her live once (with LR), and that was really great, best set of that night.

I thought the new lp was great, need to listen to it again... in also like the collabs with Sewer Election, especially the One on Second Sleep. Saw her once in new york also, was pretty drunk on Phrosties.

I don't like her earlier material so much as it seems to lack focus to me, but her recent output is great. It feels like "catchy" industrial or something like that to me, which I really appreciate. I find her work easier to get into than the average band/project in that style and that's interesting in my humble opinion.

"Obedient Grounds" is such a tune.

PUCE MARY "Fear And Pleasure" tape

Originally self released tour tape. At least my copy had quite low and unbalanced sound on that copy, so good to see Posh Isolation make bigger edition of this! Continues well the current sound of Puce Mary, but returning to this tape with more attention, it is clearly less of tight song-oriented material like for example The Great Panic. It has more of darker, yet more experimental industrial soundscape vibes to it. And that is very nice. Less of "power electronics" feel, which makes tape good addition to PM discography.
Very much recommended!

Looking back, how do you people rate The Spiral along with the rest of Frederikke's discography?

The Spiral was good, but I found the Yours tape that came out in Australia on Distort (and later repressed by the artist - this edition isn't listed on Discogs, so be wary of people flipping an incorrect edition) the same year to be better.
