NRR37: SARAH HENNIES EVERYTHING ELSE C40
$8.00

Available here: http://www.norentrecords.com/product/nrr37-sarah-hennies-everything-else-c40

The latest work from composer Sarah Hennies is percussion in the sense that a contemporary definition of "percussion" has the potential to include almost anything that isn't already defined as some other instrument (cello, piano, clarinet, etc.).

Hennies draws parallels between queer identities and being a percussionist in that both are most often defined by what they are not.

The two sides of the tape are 20-minute blocks of sound/activity seemingly without direction. A-side "Falsetto" is for "low-quality" bells found at thrift stores and flea markets while the title track explores a harder-to-define space.

Dynamically, Secret Habit deals in absolutes, performative guilt juxtaposed against personal atonement. Catholic overtones, sonically confessional. I listened to this in my office last week while reading internet erotica. Excellent cut-up noise release.

https://soundcloud.com/no-rent-records/bob-bellerue-excerpt-from-side-a-of-piano-gaucho

Piano Gaucho carefully develops Bob Bellerue's tonal infatuation with rendering the piano into a demonic ingress. The piano functions as an essential frame for amps, speakers, mics, pickups, pedals, laptop, and 'guts' to negotiate and re-evaluate the fated instrument into a much more heinous sonic source. Bellerue's experiments with the instrument mark time slowly against a rotating core of oscillating feedback — a cold, gradual pace that proceeds solemnly. Fascinated with the suspended tension of the piano strings, the pieces' deliberate pace casts long, shadowy passages of sound — forgoing any rhythmic brutalism in favor of an anxiety that evolves within long intervals of empty space. The exorcised tones breed within these open expanses. Recalling the grim work of bass experimentalists such as Stephen O'Malley or blackened Scandinavian film scores — and all the images contained therein — Bellerue roots the instrumental role of the piano firmly within this space. A wicked piano music is revealed; his commitment to instrument's sinister potential is total. (Nick Scavo)

Listen, there is nothing I can say to convince you to buy this tape, or that you would dig this tape. If you like noise, you might. I like it a lot. You may buy it, you may not. Chances are, if you are reading this, you have already made up your mind if you should buy it. I think you should. I also think that if you like noise, you should spend more time youtubing videos of people cold starting their Trabants, or big rigs jake braking on downhill roads. I also think you should stop whining about your tinnitus, and learn to embrace it. Yeah, doesn't really matter what I think you ought to do, does it?

This is a new tape by Paranoid Time. It is noisy, grating, rough, and very good in the way Paranoid Time tapes usually are. ADD TO CART. BUY. -Tommy Carlsson
