"Relevant" mastering services - experiences, suggestions, etc?

So it occurred to me recently that there's not exactly a shortage of knowledgeable techies within "these types" of music whom offer mastering services; like Viktor Ottosson, Pekka PT, Pentti Dassum, Sean McCann, Jason Lescalleet, and probably others I'm forgetting. I'm considering having an upcoming piece "mastered" as I don't think my limitations can do it justice, but with a little tweaking beyond my capabilities, could reach it's potential.

My main question is this: do these types of guys offer by-commission services at specific rates? Or is it a more "Steve Albini" type of thing, where their available time and interest in the project is a determining factor in whether they'll master your stuff?

Anyone have experiences with any of the above-mentioned? Any advice to offer? What can a novice expect to spend to have a full-length release mastered?

Can't speak for the other site but masteringbox.com works best with sparse material, it's tuned for dance music and sharp transients especially (kicks, snares, etc.)  Anything that is dense or has lots of distortion tends to confuse the algorithm from my experience.  The less compressed to begin with the better the results.

Seems like John Stillings and the Control lad are doing a lot of good work in the field. Many have spoken highly of them and the CDs I heard sounded very good.

A non noise artist I did some production for used Landr to master the track we did and I thought it sounded awful. I ended up doing it myself.

Ozone 8 has a mastering assistant option where it analyzes your work and makes suggestions. The suggestions generally aren't far off the mark and make for good starting points in my experience (track assistant on their Neutron vst makes terrible choices though)
