I watch a lot of movies (a bit too much but hey)....and pay a lot of attention to soundtracks. From time to time a OST pops up that really grabs me & also gets played at home.
please post your thoughts, tips, recommendations on interesting/experimental/industrial? etc soundtracks. No plain rock or musicals please :-)
some that really got my attention:
Contagion : short & minimal sequences, just some filtering, clinical
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HZywFKtlsM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HZywFKtlsM)
Maniac : from plain dark synth to some serious freak-out
http://youtu.be/K893VRjQM-8 (http://youtu.be/K893VRjQM-8)
Chu Ishikawa's work for Shinya Tsukamoto's movies like Tetsuo a many more....frequently beatdriven but very 'industrial' imho

http://youtu.be/KgoUAAWGBXM (http://youtu.be/KgoUAAWGBXM)

Biosphere's work for "Insomnia"
http://youtu.be/cwBqLlq9mn8 (http://youtu.be/cwBqLlq9mn8)
Eraserhead....for it's 'plain noise' value
http://youtu.be/-Z3KVFAizgo (http://youtu.be/-Z3KVFAizgo)
Goblin is playing live on the screening of Deep Red in Brussels today and i can't go lol
http://youtu.be/DLIrAswLrhU (http://youtu.be/DLIrAswLrhU)
i can easily digest dark but tacky '70 prog bombast, but maybe this topic is not the right place.....
Cannibal Holocaust of course.
Arofnosky's PI
David Lynch's Eraserhead
and my personal fave
Ennio Morricone's work for Elio petris' "La classe operaia va in paradiso"
An obvious one. Thomas Bangalter's sounds/soundtrack for Irreversible.
i have Irreversible on 2xlp.....i like the first one (with rectum etc),
http://youtu.be/Si4CRJ7y-Lg (http://youtu.be/Si4CRJ7y-Lg)
http://youtu.be/ZE-i94tQjIs (http://youtu.be/ZE-i94tQjIs)
http://youtu.be/hixn5lAg4NU (http://youtu.be/hixn5lAg4NU)
the other lp goes pretty plain daftpunk :-/
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4VU4Xtc-rw (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4VU4Xtc-rw)
Forbidden Planet, imho essential early electronics...
http://youtu.be/IkcS7-Heqzo (http://youtu.be/IkcS7-Heqzo)
Beyond The Black Rainbow, the movie reeks of retro, and so does the soundtrack, killer synth scapes,
http://youtu.be/zDH0Ykyge0c (http://youtu.be/zDH0Ykyge0c)
http://youtu.be/FQRgJTEw_OA (http://youtu.be/FQRgJTEw_OA)
As mentioned in the Death Waltz thread, John Carpenter & Alan Howarth - Escape From New York. Those early electro style synth lines are just so good. And the extended version with the sound clips from the movie interspersed actually improve the soundtrack in my opinion.
The soundtrack for Clean, Shaven is A+++ too. Dusty guitars, radio chatter, minimal drones. Which reminds me of the classic Dead Man soundtrack by Neil Young with it's pump organ segments.
So many others... but my brain is not at full capacity this morning.
Refn's Valhalla Rising, oppressive drones all the way.
Adriano Celentano's eco-conscious musical-comedy "Yuppi Du", feature some impressive inserts of noise/industrial sounds. (Not to mention one of the most brutal rape scenes ever seen in Italian cinema).
Some great moments also in Bevilaqua's "la Califfa", not so much the soundtrack itself but some noisy moments into a furnace.

Great soundtrack! I believe it's the same guy who does a lot of mastering for Posh Isolation. He used to be in Sort Sol who, based on quite drunken memories from the 80's, weren't bad at all.
Riz Ortolani - So Sweet, So Perverse
Riz Ortolani - Goodbye Uncle Tom
I'd recommend swedish composer Erik Enocksson as well, especially the Farväl Falkenberg and Apan albums.
i'll second (third?) "valhalla rising" ... too bad the score hasn't really surfaced beyond a track or two.
seconding/thirding/fourthing "irreversible." there's some truly amazing sounds on that disc, but it does get a little too electro-dancy for my liking towards the end... but man, "rectum" is fucking creepy.
"eraserhead," of course ... i'll even add "INLAND EMPIRE." the song selection was decent, but the score and sound design is where the true brilliance really lies.
"a serbian film" -- everyone's gonna think of "that dubstep song" that was used in the trailer, and yeah, it's on there, as well as some other techno-sounding stuff, but it's rough and aggressive enough to not be irritating. the rest of the disc is just cold, atmospheric industrial. great stuff.
"children shouldn't play with dead things" is one of my favorites, despite the fact that all i've ever been able to get is a rip of the sound directly from the film (no soundtrack was ever released) -- but it's all really dark analog synth noise ... really great. rips are floating around online....
shit, there's so many more....

There's a vinyl sndtrk of "Eraserhead". I've had it for a long time. It's good but I've never been a huge fan of the film.
Near Dark (tangerine dream)
All the Tetsuo movies Iron Man, Body Hammer etc.
Donnie Darko (I know this is now experimental but the best song soundtrack ever imo)

The Akira soundtrack is amazing.
Also on a "greatest unironic use of the orchestra hit synth preset" tip, The Terminator. Some tracks on that one sound way ahead of their time.
Angel's Egg and Night on the Galactic Railroad are two great anime movies with different but similarly atmospheric/dreamlike soundtracks. The Angel's Egg one to me sounds like it has quite a bit of Penderecki influence.

I love Bernard Hermann's scores. "Vertigo" particularly. Such a desperately beautiful soundtrack. I see John Carpenter has been mentioned a whole bunch. I love all of his stuff for Halloween and Escape from New York. Goblin's Suspiria is good fun. I know they're not actual soundtracks but I love early Zombi and all of Demdike Stare.
Watched The Shining again last night, reminded of how good the score is. Especially the parts with the loud, heart-pounding sound and combined with those tense strings/synths. The score is almost the creepiest part of the movie.

One of my fave LPs. I came across a copy at the Austin Rec Convention years ago right after talking about it with someone. Just started flipping through a box & there it was!
The 10"'s for Jean Rollin's REQUIEM FOR A VAMPIRE & FASCINATION are very good. All the vinyl I'm lookig forward to this year are soundtracks: THE BEYOND, HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY, LIVING DEAD AT MANCHESTER MORGUE, POSSESSION, ZOMBI 2 plus a couple I can't mention here...
Wedding Trough AKA The Pig Fucking Movie is a 70s Swedish arthouse oddity with a really bizarre garbled organ soundtrack with lots of tape manipulation. Eri Eri rema sabakutani actually features noise as a plot point as well as soundtrack and has Masaya Nakahara of Violent Onsen Geisha in a prominent role!
Anyone remember this industrial-disco "classic"? Not a soundtrack, but may be of interest to fans of Blue Velvet. The whole set of lyrics consists entirely of Dennis Hopper one-liners from the movie. Either way, funny shit:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PS2lpZZNeU
Schramm on repeat, i really like this.....cheapisch keyboard-classical, easy tunes, detuned violin.....dark!
Michael Nyman's OST for The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover is one of my favourites and has worked its way (partially) into something I've been working on.
Taxi Driver is great too, for sure and of course, Eraserhead.

I remember having The Pig Fucking Movie years n' years ago when the xerox horror zines made it sound so outrageous but I was disappointed. Mostly because it wasn't trash like I expected. I wanted to pick up the dvd but didn't want to spend the $30+ for something I may only watch once.
Wish these fucking Fulci LPs & Possession would show up SOON.
Enter The Void looks great I am still at a loss as to why I have not yet seen it.
Night of the Living Dead soundtrack is perfect and I also like to put that film on with just the audio playing. Really like the use of "emergency broadcasts" thru out the film.
Eraserhead soundtrack is pure industrial soundscapes and It is also its own perfect atmosphere, cold and dismal by itself.
Dawn of The Dead soundtrack is flawless despite having some like children's music box muzac parts, the tension slowly builds in that music and it never gets old.
Goblin and Dario Argento's work together creating the very specific scores for his films may be one of the most overlooked aspects of why his work has earned so much critical acclaim.
Hermann Kopp's synth work on the NEKROMANTIK & DER TODESKING soundtracks is fucking excellent and I love it. I know many people here are probably fan's of those films, but I am adamant about them, I love nekromantik for its look, feel and most importantly its sound. Malsonous' sub label Aesthetic records has a vinyl LP gate fold of Kopp's music for these films, can't recommend this enough: http://www.discogs.com/Hermann-Kopp-Nekronology/master/201792
PHANTASM soundtrack needs no connotation whatsoever.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Apocalypse Now REDUX soundtrack is an exercise in "the days when electronic music was laboriously performed with Moog, Arp and similar computers."
Synthesizer – Bernard L. Krause*, Don Preston, Ed Goldfarb (tracks: 11, 12), Nyle Steiner, Richard Beggs, Shirley Walker
Synthesizer [Assistant] – Andy Narell
Synthesizer [Master] – Patrick Gleeson
THX-1138 soundtrack had two components, a musical score composed by Lalo Schifrin and an abstract electronics based score by Walter Murch, who also helped to conduct the original Apocalypse Now soundtrack. THX1138 soundtrack is one of my favorite listens ever, aseptic sound environment. Walter Murch's sound masterpiece is THE CONVERSATION

There seems to be tons of fascinating Bollywood soundtrack material, I know hardly nothing about it. Really like tracks sung by Asha Bhosle, so fluid voice. Any other recommendations? This track is great, still remember my astonishment when heard it for the first time at hotel in Dhaka:

Have for various reasons been exposed to shitloads of Bollywood hit songs, and some of them are actually pretty good - much like a lot of Japanese pop music, it's a bizarre mirror of various euroamerican styles of music. Especially the vocal melodies can be great, almost resembling the harmonies of early YES and similar. Seems that the 40's through to the 70's where the golden age of Bollywood music, a lot of it becoming commercialized & synthesized later on. Their use of reverbs and other studio effects is insane at times. And of course a lot of influences from traditional Indian musics.
The intro of this is amazing - guitar sound is raw as hell! Reminds me of early FURZE 7"s... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1rAsrjAeU0
Mainstream as hell - this is one of the most
The Kronos Quartet did an album with Asha Bhosle that you'd might like to check out, guess it's their reworking of her classic songs. Most Bollywood music is of course obnoxious mainstream pop.
Saw an old episode of Inspector Morse the other day from 1987, the music was surprisingly experimental and obtuse in the scenes I saw. Composed by a Barrington Pheloung (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0006224/). Haven't looked for it on youtube but I'm sure there are at least scenes available.

Death Waltz has THE LIVING DEAD AT MANCHESTER MORGUE & PRINCE OF DARKNESS LPs up for pre-order. Thought about ordering both but just went with L.D.; cover art on P.O.D. isn't very appealing. Probably should have waited on black vinyl to save a couple bucks. L.D. is one of my fave films.

I bought two 3-cd boxes of "Bollywood Music for beginners" at a truly reasonable price. I have some compilations since earlier as well. I especially like it around the funk/disco era and also the flirtations with hippie culture in the 70's. I do especially like just that precise thing - how they often take western hits and just warps them into something so incredibly... weird.

Kwaidan, just watched this today in honor of Halloween. Brilliant sound design. Traditional Japanese instruments used in non traditional ways. Lot's of field recording type sounds; creaking wood, running water, distorted breathing, metal scraping. Overall atmosphere of dread and otherworldlyness conjured very successfully.

Interestingly, Lynch, with Alan Splet, took a VERY quiet noise, a public domain recording on file, one intended to be subliminal; "early morning presence" and turned it up...wa-ay up!
Another cool thing about soundtracks is the director-himself-noodling-with-a-synth subgenre, exemplified famously by John Carpenter and his theme in 5/8, and the even scumier style ov Hooper in "Eaten Alive" although Glen Larson's theme from Nightrider is pretty fucking awesome.

Found the Poltergeist msg in the trash; guess I didn't read it & just deleted it. I like the movie but do not need the sndtrk.
I'll definitely preorder The Fog- one of my fave movies & the sndtrk is excellant.
ye i can live without poltergeist soundtrack...too sweet sounding for me, not rotten enough . Also heads up on death waltz record store day exclusives ( spencer is the main man behind it) loads of ltd 12"/7 "'s!
RE Death Waltz, I kinda wonder why I did the second subscription series when all this other shit is gonna be released outside of the subscription. None of this shit is cheap, especially here in the States.
What is DW releasing on Record Store day? I'll jump on The Fog 2LP & the Fulci records but I haven't seen anything else mentioned that I'm hot over. I think I'll probably wait for the US pressings from Light in the Day, if they're still planning to do domestic pressings. At least, they're much cheaper than ordering direct. You can preorder The Devils Business & They Live for $20 each. I can live without signed posters & spattered vinyl. Seems like if he's going to run DW for a living then he has to keep re-pressing a lot of the popular titles.
i find a lot of John Carpenters soundtracks to be absolutely mind blowing.
also a big fan of Carnival of Souls, my girlfriend is watching a ton of early Doctor Who which the soundtrack/special effects are great, great to fall asleep to
LV - a perfect child of satan.
supreme soundtrack.
Lalo Schifrin has some nice OST work. I'm no authority at all on funk or 70's movie kitsch, but it seems like "Scorpio's View" from Dirty Harry was the basis for one of the Beastie Boys' directions. Schifrin used a great synth tone.

Death Waltz has pre-orders up for HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY & TWINS OF EVIL. Those in the U.S., check Light in the Attic Records for much cheaper pre-ordering. I order HBTC for $25 shipped. That's way better than $30+ shipping if I had ordered from the label!
The Cinematic Orchestra's fantastic jazzy soundtrack to the avant garde film Man with a Movie Camera.
The old Doctor Who sounds from the 70's, loads of great/bad sounding synth sounds.

Fantastic news! Just a while ago I purchased my first DW release, "The House by the Cemetery" by Walter Rizzati. Really excited about that one! They go pretty cheap on
AMAZON.CO.UK (http://www.amazon.co.uk/House-Cemetery-VINYL-Walter-Rizzati/dp/B00CU9QF9O/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1376076072&sr=1-1&keywords=The+House+by+the+Cemetery). I got mine for ~17€ shipped even though they cost about 23€ excluding shipping on Death Waltz.
ordering "THE FOG" as we speak. glad i opened this thread again..
anyone know anything about an official release for the BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW score? i found a torrent of it, which is ok, but it's a rip from the film, not the actual songs in full. i remember hearing about an LP release, but i haven't heard shit since.
I think Death Waltz is suppose to release BEYOND... later this year. Music sounds pretty good. I haven't seen the film, I'm not a huge sci-fi fan.
Anyone pick up RE-ANIMATOR on Waxwork? I'm hoping it'll still be around later or they'll do a re-press. Otherwise, it's not a huge deal.
Wish One-Way Static would stop fucking around & release LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT! I have a feeling I'll grumble at the price but I'll pre-order it anyway.
"The Fog Blakes Gold Edition is now on sale"

200 posts?! I'm a nerd!
First there was record store day, now there's a cassette tape day:

The only Goblin LPs I have are Dawn of the Dead & Tenebrae which I bought pretty cheap off Discogs. Seems like I have a cd of Suspiria that came with the dvd. Would love to have it on vinyl! I suggested to a friend that he should look into licensing a couple of Goblin titles for vinyl since there are no U.S. editions but he wasn't interested.

Hah, yeah. I heard about this "cassette tape day" couple of days ago. Funny but cool shit! I must get that CS, would be amazing to play it while walking around with my trusty old Walkman. Great traveling music, heh.

I agree, there should be some alternatives, especially because Italy pressings usually has quite a lot of surface noises due to them being pressed on soft vinyl (or at least that's what I've been told). CD of Suspiria that came with DVD? How cool is that! I'm expecting the vinyl version myself, should be here any day now. I ordered it from some German dude who has bunch of negative feedback so I'm not sure how long it's going take but I'm certain it's going to show up sooner or later.
Yes, U.S. DVD releases use to come with cd soundtracks. Without checking, I think Nekromantik 2 (or maybe it's Schramm ?) has a cd with it; Blue Sunshine, & the Pinky Violence set. I've got Nekro. on a couple of records too.
I have a couple of cool Italian cd collections of giallo & crime music that come with mini-lobby cards. I have the cd for All the Colors of the Dark which is one of my faves; I'd love to have it on vinyl.
I'm hoping The Fog shows up tomorrow but it'll most likely be on Monday or Tuesday.

That's really cool, would be very useful if every DVD release came with a copy of the original soundtrack. Most of the giallo soundtracks has only CD version available even though demand for vinyl is obvious. To my knowledge Nekromantik was never released as DVD+CD set but Schramm was. Found the info from
Discogs (http://www.discogs.com/Max-M%C3%BCller-Gundula-Schmitz-Schramm-Original-Soundtrack/release/1937260). I only have "Nekronology" which includes pretty much all the tracks Hermann Kopp composed for Buttgereit's flicks. Really good record if you ask me!
I checked the trailer for All the Colors of the Dark just a week or two ago and it seem very promising and the score sounded very nice indeed. I was about to buy the film from Amazon but it seems to be quite rare these days, as you can see from
here (http://www.amazon.co.uk/All-Colors-Dark-Region-NTSC/dp/B0002JP2SO/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1376688284&sr=1-1&keywords=All+the+Colors+of+the+Dark). Fucking £129.61!!!
I haven't ordered The Fog yet since I'm kinda broke at the moment and also because Carpenter's compositions haven't really grown in me just yet. Sounds sick, right?! :D
By the way, didn't see this mentioned here... Edward Artemiev's scores for Andrei Tarkovsky's artsy pantsy films were reissued by two different labels just recently. The Russian pressings can be purchased here (http://www.normanrecords.com/records/142094-edward-artemiev--solaris-music) (Non-OST version of Solaris), here (http://www.normanrecords.com/records/141822-edward-artemiev-solaris) (OST version of Solaris) and here (http://www.normanrecords.com/records/142093-edward-artemiev%E2%80%93stalker) (Non-OST version of Stalker). US version of Solaris can be purchased here (http://www.superiorviaduct.com/products/eduard-artemiev-solaris-original-soundtrack-lp) (OST version). Superior Viaduct will release an US version of Stalker as well but with a slight delay.
Here's some shots of the non-OST versions of the soundtracks:

Confusing, right?! Cool?! Fuck yes!!!
Nekro.2 2-disc set from Barrel Entertainment has the cd with music from both films. They also released Nekro. & Schramm in the U.S. They were set to do Der Todesking (I have a PAL rel in a metal case & necklace) but went out of business due to right's issues over something else, I think. They were going to do Angst also, which, may have been the issue.
That's insane over the All the Colors... dvd! Glad I have it; it's one of the best releases from Shriek Show- it has an amazing slideshow in the extras. I think I still have a PAL Reg. 2 dvd of it too. I don't need it & would sell for a reasonable price. Drop me a line if you're interested.
There is also this rel. for Nekro.: http://www.discogs.com/Various-Nekromantik-Original-Motion-Picture-Soundtrack/master/241991
It's worth it just for the cover art. Back when the film originally came out on VHS in Germany, I knew the guy who was the first person in the U.S. to import it so as an extra, he received a Nekro. pic disc 7". He then had the PAL tape transferred to NTSC & sold dups to various people. It had terrible, tiny Engl. subtitles you could barely read.
Here is the pic disc 7": http://www.discogs.com/Various-Nekromantik/release/1618504
Thanks for the heads-up on those Edward Artemiev US pressings. Everything about those films is top shelf.

Oh, I see what you mean. Well I don't know shit about US releases anyway so maybe I shouldn't pretend I do, haha! I got "burned" like they say. I hate all that copyright crap they put over every release. I know it has it's purposes but comon, fuck off! Angst would've been amazing, STILL haven't seen that one!
Like I mentioned few posts back, I'm kinda broke at the moment so I'll get back to you when I have some extra dough. Would really like to grab that from you. By the way, I'm still looking for that Brown On Ebony tape, have you found it from your archives?
Oh yeah, I checked that release just yesterday while searching for info. I really like the art but how about the music? Don't remember the soundtrack on the films that well, only the ones composed by Hermann Kopp. 30€ is kinda salty price but I guess one has to pay to get quality...
I guess Nekro would look quite nice on VHS, the grainy quality would fit the film perfectly.
I'm looking for that Nekro 7". I guess it's pretty much impossible to find under 50€ and there's no way I'm gonna put that much money on a single. Not that much of an obsessive collector... yet, hah!

No problem, really excited about those. Wasn't very proper of me to call these as "artsy pantsy" films because like you said, they are "top shelf". Me and my bad jokes...
I would think the music on the Nekromantik 7" would be from Kopp? I didn't pay attention. For the music, the LPs are best. I'd only want the pic 7" for the awesome art but not at any collector price.
The All the Colors... dvd will be here. It's German, I think but is in English or has Eng.subs. It was the first region 2 dvd I bought when I got a cheap player I could program a code in to get it to unlock. It died so now I have a much higher end player that plays anything (dvd) without any hidden codes. I haven't moved to Blu-ray yet.
I think I did see the Brown on Ebony tape not too long ago so I have a general idea which box it's in.
Evilspeak dvd arrived but no fog.
In case we're talking about THIS (http://www.discogs.com/Various-Nekromantik/release/1618504), then there's only one track by Kopp and other four by some random guys, namely Daktari Lorenz and John Boy Walton. The 7" is definitely more of a collector item since one can acquire the 12" for "only" 30€ where the 7" would probably cost at least 50€.
Does the film have German covers? Not really fond in those... But on the other hand, since it does include Eng dubs & subs, I guess it's alright. Really excited to hear that you finally spotted that BOE tape, I want it bad!
Just checked the trailer for Evilspeak and it seems "bad" enough to be good. I know this isn't the movie thread but I would like to recommend Straw Dogs from 1971. Not as cheesy as Evilspeak but really good nevertheless. HERE'S (http://youtu.be/yXkqGVfm1mo) the trailer. Sam is one cool mofo, a mix between Herbert West from Re-Animator and William Foster from Falling Down, hah!
Hopefully The Fog will show up soon. I actually listened the whole soundtrack the other night and it is quite good. Some of Carpenter's compositions are too "poppy" for me but that one sounded pretty nice.
Evilspeak is gloriously terrible. Fun.
John Boy Walton: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hul05RaFjzA
Evilspeak is classic '80s horror. Satanic pigs, animal sacrifice, evil computers, & one of the greatest decapitations EVER!
Peckinpah is one of my fave directors. The Wild Bunch & Straw Dogs being my favorites from him.
German covers? You mean, like a hardcover book? If so, then no. Regular dvd cover. I do have a few of those hardcovers releases. I kind of like them.
Thanks for the John Boy Walton link. Sounds... like it should... I guess.
Fucking hell, I fucked up. I was referring to Dustin Hoffman character, David, when I was talking about who he reminds me of. asfsadbflsdbghs
Hmm... I actually meant does is has German writing on the cover... Those hardcovers are quite sought after and very nice indeed. I don't have any of them but have seen pics. Not really into paying more than 20-30€ for a film and to my knowledge those can go for hundreds(?!)
THE FOG 2LP showed up. Super, sturdy gatefold sleeve. Looks really nice. Giving it a spin later tonight.
Another vote for Eraserhead.
Also, "The Shining". I enjoy about 3/4's of what I've heard by The Caretaker, a music project influenced by the reconstruction of the ending song (Midnight, The Stars and You, sung by Al Bowlly) in that movie. It's hit or miss but the hits are great in a creepy, dark ambient sort of way.
And this is most certainly cheating, but Lustmord's soundtrack to "Zoetrope" is a favorite.
Pre-orders for Waxwork's "Day Of The Dead (http://waxworkrecords.com/day-of-the-dead-on-sale-info)" begins on Aug 27.
This release features, for the first time ever, every musical cue used in the film (over an hour's worth of music). Our source material for this release were the original 1985 master tapes. The tapes were restored and re-mixed by composer John Harrison (Creepshow, Tales from the Crypt, Tales From The Darkside) and mixing engineer Michael Farrow (music scoring engineer of The Big Lebowski, Cabin Fever, Hostel, Halloween, Where The Wild Things Are). The score was then re-mastered for vinyl by former White Zombie guitarist, J. Yuenger.
Day Of The Dead will be a 180 gram 2xLP limited release on Cream Yellow Marble vinyl (Sides A & B) and Military Green Marble vinyl (Sides C & D). All housed in a heavyweight old-school tip-on matte varnish gatefold jacket with spot UV gloss finish.
There will be only 300 variants of Zombie Flesh and Blood vinyl available exclusively through the official Waxwork Records web store on Tuesday, August 27th.
The full LP package artwork and layout (front and back cover, inner gatefold art, inserts, and center labels) has been created by Jay Shaw.
This limited release features essay length director notes from "The Godfather Of Zombies" himself, George A. Romero.
This release will also include an 11×22 replica of "THE DEAD WALK!" newspaper article from the opening credits of the film. The newspaper article was re-created by Jay Shaw and includes essay length composer notes from John Harrison.
LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT is up for pre-order from Light in the Attic for the U.S. & One-Way Static Records. I'm surprised the lim. colored vinyl was only $21. I was expecting $25+ just for black.
After this, One-Way Static will be releasing THE HILLS HAVE EYES! I don't remember the music but it's another fave film of mine.

Fuck me, I don't have any money for this!!!
Are the Death Waltz and other boutique OST reissues commonly pressed at GZ? Sounds like The Last House on the Left is, and that's why I ask. And does GZ do tip-on jacket printing?
I was going to order the black to save a few bucks but had more in PayPal than I thought so went with the lim.ed. Nice to read it'll have a flexi that I'll never play but an extra is better than no extra. Layout of the gatefold is nice, similar to the British dvd set I have that opens up into several panels, all printed in red. I have the book on the film too published by FAB, I think.
http://blog.lightintheattic.net/?p=15081
The DW releases are all pressed in some guy's shed but they're really nice, considering the conditions.
Death Waltz are pressed at GZ. I'm curious to see a GZ tip-on jacket. Not many printers mess with them. Stoughton is the only place in the USA to do them.
Just looked at the HBTC LP, definitely pressed at GZ. That factory is not a shed.
imho the DW releases are incredibly 'dusty', i find it anoying when mint virgin vinyl crackles like hell....
the countless seamsplit cover, the flood of non-subscription-releases, mailing wrong coloured releases, the website-bugs, etc etc ............i expected a bit more :-/
still, interesting titles.
That's why I said they were pressed in a shed. I figured Zeno was going to whine about GZ. I haven't received any dusty records nor any crackling records on DW or other labels that use the plant.
Any time you order a record, tell the label to REMOVE VINYL FROM SLEEVE!!! It'd be nice if everyone did that but since stores sell their records, I guess, they have to seal them.
What "flood of non-subscription releases"? I didn't subscribe so that isn't an issue. I know The Fog wasn't included in the subs. Do you mean all those record store day releases?

I've run into quite a few people who won't buy anything pressed at GZ, but they hesitate to ask publicly. As Mikko often reminds, it isn't that GZ isn't capable of pressing a good sounding, nicely manufactured record. It's that labels don't opt to pay for the higher-end service. Or that they sometimes throw money at the packaging and only get the budget vinyl quality, which sounds like this might be the case with these OSTs. I can't say I've run into too many crackly GZ records, but more often than not, they sound like garbage. I'm not paying $20-30 for LPs with poor sound when the sister CD sounds better, comes with bonus tracks, and is nearly half the price.
It's interesting how shrinkwrapping is back to being common. The success of gimmicks like Record Store Day has to play a factor. And as a label, you probably get in fewer arguments with eBay, Discogs, and Amazon if everything is sealed. I hardly bought anything in the 90s that was sealed, but even smaller punk labels are now sealing all their releases (included as part of some package pressing deals). And they grumble about having to open every record to ship, though they know it is how it should be done. One step forward and two steps back. I can't say I'd be excited about carefully cutting open mounds of product when I had the expectations of not having to mess with them further.
Should also keep in mind how many records are purchased to collect and not play. I would imagine with OSTs, there is that additional demographic that is buying them as novelty/memorabilia. Maybe the soundtrack didn't stand out, but the movie is a favorite. I don't know how much you can trust journalism, but haven't there been a few articles written about record buyers not ever opening the records? In that case, you'd want them sealed...except when wanting to be sure you received the ltd.ed. splatter vinyl that you ordered and not black by mistake. I don't think anyone should underestimate the power of the bonus download code.
What records pressed at GZ sound like "garbage"? List a bunch of them so there's a chance I own it & can give it another listen.
I don't think I've ever heard a record I'd describe as "poor" in sound quality. I remember the debut Guitar Wolf LP sounding like shit & it wasn't suppose to, I think? The presser fucked it all up was the story I remember hearing.
It's hard to believe so many labels & bands around the world are idiots allowing GZ to press such poor recordings and only a "few people" recognize how bad everything sounds.

It's hard to believe so many labels & bands around the world are idiots allowing GZ to press such poor recordings and only a "few people" recognize how bad everything sounds.
To be candid, I am one of those people who prefers to not buy anything pressed at GZ. A handful of years ago, I started noticing similar sound qualities in everything that came out of there. It was around the time when Pirates Press exploded. Sort of like how Unisound or Morrisound (Florida?) or Metropolis (Chicago mastering joint, now known as Prairie Cat) had a signature sound to nearly everything they did. If you liked that signature, or didn't take note of it, then no harm in it. I never had a problem with Morrisound like some did, but I didn't care for Metropolis. We are talking about human hearing and craftsmanship. It makes perfect sense that they'd leave a mark on their work. And then with Direct Metal Mastering, it has an effect on the music, and nobody is going to really deny that. It was a selling point for the technology. DMM wasn't intended to be the same as lacquers. Personally, I never liked DMM. It has a shallow, digital feel to it (compressed dynamics is how I'd describe it), which is somewhat funny since it preceded digital by many years. So if you have a technology that has a digitalness to it, and then you combine it with a digital remaster and all-digital technology in the studio, the potential is you have a
really digital sounding result. I won't go into the misfortune of MP3s working their way into sourcing and the triple digital threat.
Off track there. I don't care for DMM mastering. At the time I made a conscious decision to no longer buy GZ pressed records, most of them were DMM. It was part of their package deals, so many people used them.
As for bands and labels knowing, or not knowing, better...well, there are a lot of people who don't know the terms lossy vs lossless (not to mention the many people who declare they cannot tell the difference). They don't know the difference between 16bit and 24bit. They don't know the difference between lacquers and DMM. They have access to great technology, but out of lack of interest or the complexity of the technology, they don't understand it (or think it will do the work for them, so they don't need to know). I've run into bands selling demos on cassette and download, and they can't even tell me if the cassettes were made with MP3s or wav files. They don't even know what their own masters are. "this is what the studio gave us, and we didn't ask." There's a lot of loose play with music technology by both bands and labels. They readily admit it, too. Their understanding is so weak and uninformed that they don't even know how terrible it sounds that they don't know basic answers about what they do.
So, to answer your question about what do I own from GZ that sounds terrible. I believe the last GZ pressed records I bought were Paintbox - Relicts and Paintbox - Trips. The sad thing about these is the label is VERY concerned with sound quality, often having things cut and recut more than once until it is done right (most labels do not go to that expense). They are in the know and make sound quality and honoring the integrity of the original recording top priorities. They put a lot of effort, time, and money into these things, only to have GZ screw them up. And now that you have me thinking about them, they had a dirty feel to the vinyl. Lots of non-fill-like noise in the grooves. I'll have to dig around and see what other examples I can give you. Like I said, I all but stopped buying GZ records a handful of years ago now, so I don't have a giant collection of them. If they've since improved, shame on me.
You should start a label so you can tell everyone "See? THIS is how a record should sound" and we'll all sit in awe of your knowledge and know-how.
Or start a blog with tips on how everyone should be recording their music; save their files; definitions of "lossy" (new to me) and "lossless", explanations of what the differences are & how listeners should be able to tell the difference in sound; how to properly master, n' all that shit.
And what pressing plants you approve of.

Or I could just ask where and how records are pressed and not buy some of them based on that information. Doesn't it seem strange that basic questions like that are 1) not asked 2) irritate people when they are asked?
I can understand why labels may be irritated that people assume their releases may sound like budget quality garbage because they were pressed at GZ without having heard the release.
GZ are used as budget pressing, just as United and Rainblow are in the USA. Possibly why labels don't make it public information? GZ is greatly utilitarian, not a performance entity. If you want people to respect your releases based on sound quality, you use and advertise RTI and someone like George Horn (Fantasy Studios) for mastering. Not everyone can afford that. Not everyone knows. Not everyone cares. But GZ is what it is. I don't pull up at a Formula I race in a Ford Focus. The Focus is going to get me from point A to point B. It isn't going to corner or go fast. It's not going to perform on an exceptional level.
Yeah, vinyl pressing is totally comparable to cars that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and get up to 200mph...
Maybe it wasn't the best analogy, but unless you're inhibited by a pedantic net, the gist is there. Performance vs utility.

GZ are used as budget pressing
Would have agreed on the budget-thing 10-15 years ago perhaps, but the thing is that the prices of GZ are not that cheap, they are pretty much up to par with any other (european) pressingplant. For 7"s, they are even slightly more expensive from my experience. Anyway, while I never had any real issues with the GZ sound quality (to me, that is still mostly a matter of
taste more than anything else, and DMM technique may suit some recordings/masters better than others and the other way around), I never really enjoyed the feel of a GZ vinyl. They do feel cheap, overtly plastic and there's something funky with the grooves.
Something is off about our timeline, or maybe GZ gave Pirates Press loss-leader prices on the package deals to build share in the US market. Or maybe to not make much off the record pressings but to make their profit on the printing since there are fewer environmental regulations and lower printing costs in the Czech Republic. As a rough estimate, between 2003-2010, anywhere from 35-75% of the records from US labels that I wanted were pressed at GZ. I know of at least two well-established US labels claiming they could order from GZ (shipped) for the same or lesser than going to local plants (pick up with no shipping), and because GZ offered unbeatable prices on splatter and colored vinyl, GZ was a no-brainer. The prices were so competitive that they couldn't deny using them, and for labels and bands less seasoned, Pirates Press was even more desirable because of the one-stop shopping, package deals with budget pricing, and PP agents doing all the work for them. In this same period, GZ seemed to streamline their process with DMM mastering as default, which I believe is also automated. The vinyl quality dropped a bit. They whittled away at their system to increase production and cut costs. Possibly two different pricing structures for differing markets; one having more competition than the other.
A few years ago, when petroleum prices shot upwards, and when shipping subsequently was affected, GZ cut-throat pricing was adjusted. In those same cases as before, GZ wasn't nearly as competitive or as viable an option for US labels. US labels that had been working with Pirates Press were again more tempted to bring that manufacturing back to Rainbow, Archer, and any of the other common USA plants. The deal was no longer at GZ.
One of the better consequences (IMO) of the skyrocketing worldwide shipping costs is that fewer labels outside of Europe are tempted by GZ. And to be clear, it isn't a nation thing. It's a quality issue for me. I don't want anyone confusing me with one of the folk who are anti-Europe and pro-USA. That has zero to do with it. USA plants are chock full of their own clusterfucking.
My point is that they were very successful with gaining foothold in the USA market for various reasons, and it wasn't until maybe 2-3 years ago that GZ pricing stopped being so appetizing here. They apparently couldn't maintain that pricing, but I've heard (because I ask) little indication that the quality has gone up.
I've been led to believe the grooves are different because they don't adhere to RIAA EQing standards, so they can cut the groove differently, mostly cutting a more shallow/thinner groove (which is also why they can cram 25-30 minutes on a side of an LP, whereas USA plants would prefer staying around the 20 mark). This obviously also affects dynamics and where DMM compression-like symptoms come into play. Some of the most beautifully pressed records I've ever seen have come from GZ (1990s product), so I don't have much of an issue with the look and feel of the records, but I can also understand someone feeling they look and feel cheap. The recent ones do look and feel cheaper than they once did. They use a strange, harder vinyl. Maybe lesser rubber content? I've always wanted to bend one in half and compare how flexible they are compared to other vinyl. More plastic-like for sure.
I forgot to ask. Are Europeans familiar with the name Pirates Press and their role as GZ middleman between the pressing plant and the US market? I think a lot of it grew out of the language barrier situation, and without Pirates Press, the average US customer was intimidated and turned off by using GZ.
Apparently DW will put out a reissue of New York Ripper OST in October...

I thought these were just rumors so I'm quite confused right now... Amazing news, though!
Some tracks from the record:

Ugh, not a fan of that artwork! I love the movie but the music doesn't do much for me so I may skip it. DW also has City of the Living Dead in the pipeline, too.

Definitely not very nice artwork, especially since the original was so tasty. Not too great music but the film is so fantastic that I might have to grab the OST. I remember there were at least one decent track on it so maybe I make that a proper reason for me to buy the record, hah. Had no glue about City Of The Living Dead. NOW THAT'S EXCITING!!!
Paura (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vH0tYZBVZF0&feature=youtu.be&t=1m4s) is one of my favorite Fabio Frizzi compositions.
I'm looking forward to City of the Living Dead. Let's hope DW doesn't pick more EC-inspired comic book art for it!
I go back n' forth on which is my favorite Fulci film, The Beyond or COTLD.

Now that's a tough one! I don't even want to try to pick my favorite Fulci film, be it giallo, zombie or whatnot. By the way, Sette Note In Nero aka The Psychic is really good giallo flick. Watched it from YT some months ago and was really surprised. I mean it's great even for the already-high-standards of Fulci.
Apparently they will also release new
Goblin EP (http://www.avclub.com/articles/italian-horror-masters-goblin-to-release-new-ep-to,102989). Damn, DW is keeping soundtrack fans busy for sure! Speaking of Goblin, I remember I mentioned some time ago that I ordered pretty much every Goblin record but turned out that one of the sellers wanted to fuck me in the ass instead of selling me records so I was left without Non Ho Sonno, Zombi and Suspiria. Those are good stuff so it's a shame...

Yeah, it always seemed like a weird thing to me to get a pallet of records shipped across the ocean, via a broker or not. Why would anyone do that? I guess money talks, and it's even more fucked up that it's actually
cheaper than having the records made in country if that's the case. I heard several people talking about Pirate Press as an actual pressing plant also, so maybe some just don't know what's going on there. Here in Sweden there haven't really been any other options than having the records made in a different country for a while now. I guess Pirate Press are good business for GZ and that they are getting pretty sweet deals, because pressing at GZ as a regular customer here
is not that cheap. Recently compared price lists with the other bigger pressing plants in Europe and prices are pretty much similar.

And what's up with the knife wielder? Shouldn't he be missing two fingers on his right hand? Will pick up though, I for one love that soundtrack, only have it as part of that Italian Shock DVD.
haven't read through this entire thread, but two recent films I viewed with amazing soundtracks were Solaris (the original, of course) and Night of the Living Dead.
I've enjoyed the variation in the Death Waltz art styles generally but that New York Ripper cover is terrible, really really terrible
Not sure if I've mentioned it on this board, but I would consider Hans Zimmer's Thin Red Line Soundtrack to be among his best. Mention of Caul in Zeno's ambient list jogged my memory... I was almost half tempted to plug this into the drone thread, but I suppose it had better go here.

So, yes. Very pretty, big budget, soundtracky-y type stuff, but just plain done right. Love it all the way through to children's choir, which, just to show you what a tough guy I am, often brings me to tears.
many many of my fave OST's already posted here , not much to add really but a few of my faves not mentioned here yet , perhaps of interest to some of you here :
H.G. Lewis' soundtrack works (i like the minimal stuff he done for Blood Feast best) , a tiny taste of what i mean can be heard here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkWtLO1Vx0M
a cd been released of his works http://www.amazon.com/Popping-Sounds-Herschell-Gordon-Lewis/dp/B00005Y6R2 , has a lot of cool stuff on it...
and i also really like the kinda "crappy" synth soundtrack of Combat Shock , some of it can be heard here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvrGth9E4ys
I agree with Combat Shock. The synth sounds are pretty good. I haven't watched the film in a few years so can't remember if there is even a soundtrack other than at the end?
More HG Lewis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDZZwCH9U_I
This will be coming from Death Waltz soon & it's another fave film of mine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LS7k3G_6IjE

yesyes , the synth-sounds are all through the film , especially in the scenes where the junkies chase eachother through the stinky streets of NYC , the Vietnam-war flashback scenes mostly have some library/marching music but the synth-sounds are (thankfully) more dominantly present in the flick...
More HG Lewis is always a good thing in my book , thanks !
agree with you on "Assault on Precint 13" , both the (original) flick as well as the OST kick ass imo.
i believe there was a remake of it some time ago ??? ...not that it matters too much to me anyway as i usually don't watch remakes (especially not the current flood of classic cult/horror movie remakes)
A pretty decent film I saw in theatres recently that had a pretty good soundtrack was "You're Next". Whole film was a half decent modern reference to classic 80s slasher films, including soundtrack. Very synth heavy and became increasingly intense as the film progressed. Not sure if any samples of it are available online or not.

Death Waltz is releasing ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 as a one-time pressing of 1,000 copies. Light in the Attic has it up for pre-order for those within the U.S.
Release date for LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT is getting close! Sure hope they're running on schedule.
Waxwork Records put Day of the Dead back on sale couple of days ago. Seems to still be in stock (http://waxworkrecords.com/product/day-of-the-dead/). For those of you who are concerned about the quality, I can at least say that the packaging looks fantastic:
The DAY OF THE DEAD looks really good but the music isn't anything I'd listen to. I watched the film not too long ago to make sure. I kind of kick myself for skipping RE-ANIMATOR from the same label.
Death Waltz will be releasing the ost for "Slumber Party Massacre" which, supposedly, was created with only " a Casio keyboard, a cymbal and [two] crystal glasses". It was originally planned for Halloween but has been pushed back. DW also has plans for a bunch of Italian ost's that have never been issued before. All that info came from this interview: http://bloody-disgusting.com/news/3257728/interview-talking-the-rise-of-vinyl-horror-osts-with-waxwork-records-death-waltz-records-and-one-way-static-records/
I'm psyched for ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LS7k3G_6IjE
I hope DW will be doing Carpenter's THE THING some time in the near future. Only makes sense as they've released everything else.
There are strong rumors that Waxwork will be doing CREEPSHOW & One-Way Static has announced their next release will be THE HILLS HAVE EYES. Both of those are must-owns for me.
Not horror related, but Mondo released a 2xLP of Ghibli movies songs by the Czech Philarmonic Orchestra.

A friend of mine bought some really nice ghibli and other anime vinyl when we went to Japan some years ago. Weird synth 'image albums' of ghibli soundtracks alongside more straightforward OSTs.

Refn's Valhalla Rising, oppressive drones all the way.
Watched Drive and Only God Forgive last night, more "pop" music, but still great. Esp. OGF had some fine moments.
+; Picked up the soundtrack to "Edge of Darkness" today, the british miniseries form early eighties. Some nice gritty synths there, topped with coked out guitarleads by Clapton.
Finally watched Beyond the Black Rainbow, pretty nice synth soundtrack treading the same evocative/homage/pastiche line as the rest of the film.

One-Static's next release will be THE HILLS HAVE EYES. I don't remember anything from the soundtrack but I love the film so will, most definitely, order it unless the price is way up there.
I've listened to Goblin's DAWN OF THE DEAD & PROFONDO ROSSO Lp's the last couple of nights.

LP of horror trailers. I'm about to d/l it...
I've not read this entire thread, but if it isn't limited to OSTs, Cory Strand (Altar of Waste, Lethe, etc.) does reinterpretations of many classic horror OSTs. Some are meh, but The Shining Ancillaries are fantastic. Probably going to pick up the Halloween II drone version that was released today too.
HALLOWEEN 2LP up for sale on the Mondo site; gatefold, pressed at 45rpm.

VALHALLA RISING soundtrack is finally released! http://www.amazon.com/Valhalla-Rising-Peter-Kyed/dp/B00F6SHE3M
LP version coming in november... already preordered mine..
Someone added couple more Center Music S.p.A. (http://www.discogs.com/label/Center+Music+S.p.A.) releases (Zombie 1 & 2) on Discogs - purchased both of them. I already have three of their releases and they look and sound amazing. And surprisingly enough, they were sealed when I received them. Now purchased Profondo Rosso along with those two new additions. Will post pictures somewhere around next month ("latest purchases"-topic).
I downloaded the "Make them die slowly" LP but it doesn't make for very interesting listening.
I'd like to see "Valhalla Rising" again. May check it out before the record is released.
The Center Music S.p.A. tapes have excellent cover arts. I assume they're all bootlegs?

Agree! I'd like to have those. I like the Dutch Oven tapes for Eaten Alive & Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Death Waltz announced that Assault on Precinct 13 has been pushed back until next month. Hopefully, Mondo will get Halloween shipped out this month. Kind of weird they couldn't get it done for release on Halloween day.

Really need the Dutch Oven tapes! By the way, listening to Profondo Rosso now and this is amazing! I have the vinyl version which is great for a prog record but this cassette includes some alternative takes of "School At Night" and some other exclusives that weren't on the vinyl version. Really happy that I purchased this even though at first it felt little unnecessary. Halloween should've been released on Halloween day for sure, would've been very cool. My local recordshop will stock it but I don't see myself grabbing it, not for +30€ to say at least!
I've had a real thing for James Bond themes recently. Shoot me.

Those HORROR tape bootlegs look very inviting! Damn you Scat!!
I preordered The Hills Have Eyes cassette & will order the black vinyl later. I read that colored vinyl & tapes are nearly sold out from OWS & LITA. The tape was cheaper, I may be happy with that. I watched the film a couple of weeks ago & the music isn't anything special; some nice minimal synth sounds along with typical movie music.
Halloween 2LP is in transit. Hoping it'll arrive today or tomorrow...
ok, those new Death Waltz-sleeves just suck....what's up with all this "tip-on" bullshit, covers impossible to get your inner sleeves & inserts back into ....
What new releases have the tip-on sleeve from DW? I'm waiting for Assault on Precinct 13; hopefully it'll ship out in a few days.
The Last House on the Left has the tip-on sleeve but I don't recall having any issues with it. And, I think, The Fog was the last DW release I received. I don't recall it being difficult either.
Assault = tipon gatefold, just like The Fog, good quality but i allways seems to struggle with inner sleeves....i have the same issue with the Vivenza records on Rotor...just too tight.
Ripper & Room are 'casebound' tipon, it's the first time i buy this kind of sleeve, inner sleeve just fits, insert & poster are a pain in the ass to get in & out lol
and Ripper is just plain ugly
the legendary Wendy Carlos score for A clockwork orange of course!! massive shit
Watched The Warriors for the first time in many years. Such a great OST. It, and Escape from New York, left such powerful impressions on me. Reading over the IMDB trivia and goofs was interesting.
been listening to THE TERMINATOR & TERMINATOR 2 soundtracks quite a bit lately. the OST for the first film is cheesy but still creepy/dark 80's synth goodness-- bonus if you can get a hold of the "definitive edition"-- extra tracks by brad fiedel & no lame 80's rock music tracks. the OST for the second film is quite good, not incredible. it's tough to listen to because i've seen the movie so many fucking times, it's really hard not to play the whole thing out in my head. still a good OST, though, lots of tracks that either weren't included in the film, or were cut so short that you won't even recognize them... trying to track down LP versions of each that won't cost me an arm and a leg...
Assault on Precinct 13 arrived. Holy crap, that's a thick cardboard gatefold! The vinyl is difficult to get in but I usually just leave the vinyl in the middle of the sleeve for storage. One good thing about the thick sleeve is no one should have split seams during shipping.
I too just got the Assault On Precinct 13 vinyl in the mail. Beautiful. One of the nicest sleeves I've seen in awhile.
Now I hope that The Thing soundtrack gets reissued sometime soon. That's my favorite film of all time.
I'm guessing that JC's The Thing will get released sooner or later by either Mondo or Death Waltz. It only makes sense as all of the other films have been released so far.
AOP13 sounds great at 45rpm esp. the bass parts. My copy has some static popping towards the very end of both sides. It was really bad on the first listen.
Has anyone heard the LP for The Cremator? I think it's on Finders Keepers.
My copy experienced the same problems.
I'm hoping that there aren't too many legal hurdles to jump through for The Thing soundtrack, since John Carpenter didn't do the music himself.
Oh yeah! The Thing is by Ennio Morricone. I bet that definitely makes the rights more complicated. Fingers crossed.
I really don't understand all the excitement about Death Waltz reissuing all these soundtracks that I see nice copies of the original pressings for sale all the time in record stores - why would anyone be excited to pay more for a reissue with terrible artwork when a good condition copy of the original can easily be found for less? granted this is not the case with 100% of their releases but I would say it generally seems to be the case with the majority.
Valhalla Rising - Was a great movie and has a great ambient soundtrack!

The vast majority of DW's releases are titles that have not been in print on vinyl (& some include extras not on those orig. pressings) since the late '70s or early-mid '80s so count yourself lucky that you have access to the original pressings in record stores for low prices that the rest of us have no access to.
Quote from: bitewerksMTB on December 17, 2013, 11:44:32 PMcount yourself lucky that you have access to the original pressings in record stores for low prices that the rest of us have no access to.
I suppose, its just strange to me having bought my copies of, for example, the John Carpenter's "They Live" & "Prince of Darkness" original LPs for ~$10 in what I would call VG to NM condition ("Prince of Darkness" was factory sealed) at Goodwill / St. Vincent de Paul/ Half-Price Books type places, not some secret elite speciality store, and have seen other copies diff. places around the US fairly regularly. I'm no expert on all their releases but going off those 2, not only are there no extras but in fact Prince of Darkness is missing a track (A1 Opening Titles 4:14) from the original release!
Obviously they are doing something right based on there success & popularity, maybe instead of whining about it I should learn from their experience & release a reissue of something like the "Flashdance" soundtrack (also technically out of print on vinyl despite being readily available for cheap everywhere) but do it as a limited edition on colored vinyl and have somebody make some cartoon cover art on his computer and charge $30
To give a positive conclusion to all this satirical nay-saying: to anyone interested in the soundtracks Death Waltz puts out I would suggest at least looking into finding copies of the large initial pressings many of the soundtracks had as a less expensive alternative rather than assuming its impossible to find just because it is being reissued. It won't be an option for all of them but unless you really like those cartoon covers Death Waltz does its at least worth checking into.
By "extras", I mean, signed posters/prints & liner notes by the composer/director plus all the pretty vinyl colors you can choose from. Believe it or not, some people like those things.
The advice about buying older pressings for lower prices when they're found is great advice. I don't think anyone has ever mentioned that before in the history of record collecting.

I agree that it's not as good as the film's poster art but, I guess, the rights to the original art would be expensive. I haven't picked up anything from Waxwork due to their prices; $27 for Rosemary's Baby is just too much for a single record. I'm betting that Creepshow will be $30+.
One-Static posted samples to Cannibal Ferox which is much better than I remember; I haven't viewed the film in a couple of years.
I'm looking forward to C.F. & City of the Living Dead from Death Waltz plus they're doing The Beyond. I may grab their release as I bent the corner on my Mondo release & DW may have improved sound as they're claiming they're mastering from "original masters". I have no clue what Mondo used.
I passed on Ms.45 (haven't seen the film in a very long time; cool cover art), Forbidden World (cool film), The Omen (music isn't anything I'd re-listen to), Blue Sunshine (I have a cd ost that came with the dvd from Synapse), or Here Comes the Devil (haven't seen the film but music is suppose to be good).

In that case the artwork may have some potential. I like the idea that they might illustrate art from different chapters of the film like "The Lonesome Death Of Jordy Verril", as can be seen from the preview.

I just checked those samples yesterday and you're right, they're awesome. I think I have some of those tracks, if not all, on the Switzerland bootleg tapes that I posted here some months ago but that vinyl is a must.

Quote from: MikerdeathApocalypse Now REDUX soundtrack is an exercise in "the days when electronic music was laboriously performed with Moog, Arp and similar computers."
I read this article recently that was quite interesting:
http://mixonline.com/mag/audio_apocalypse_redux/
Quote from: andy vomitbeen listening to THE TERMINATOR & TERMINATOR 2 soundtracks quite a bit lately. the OST for the first film is cheesy but still creepy/dark 80's synth goodness-- bonus if you can get a hold of the "definitive edition"-- extra tracks by brad fiedel & no lame 80's rock music tracks.
another interesting recent article:
http://rejectedfilmscores.150m.com/bradfiedelinterview.html
Quote from: brad fiedelTerminator was very difficult because I was using many different synths and sequencers and because I didn't have midi available on many of them I had to sync them by hand. This is why the main theme is in a very odd time signature. The looping of the prophet 10 was just a little short of a complete measure.

I didn't see anything on Finders Keepers about the upcoming LP. I'll buy it based on price & if I can find a distro in the U.S. Samples are good & the artwork is excellent; I've seen the film but remember very little about it.
CANNIBAL FEROX is up for pre-ordering from the label & Light in the Attic in the U.S. The special edition will have different, uncensored artwork than the black vinyl.

No, actually the soundtrack is by Roberto Donati and Fiamma Maglione, Carlo was only the conductor. I think the film is quite good and has one very fap-worthy scene where Me Me Lai is fucked by multiple natives.

For me it's all about Cannibal Holocaust. Must be amongst my top-10 movies of all time. I think it's quite cool that they recycled some scenes with different camera angles in various films. It kinda forms this unity between the films, as if there would be various white people in same surroundings within the same time frame but with different purposes. I think it's kinda neat...

well was common at the time. "nightmare concert" of Fulci contains a lot of scenes from others movies of himself.
the cool aspect of this movie is the ispiration from the real mass suicide of Jonestown

I am: It fucking sucks :D
It's too bad the vinyl will not have the original poster art. I'd prefer that. The new art isn't great; it is better than that NY Ripper art.
This is interesting:
"...both the CD & Vinyl come with an exclusive bonus cue in the form of a ten minute City Of The Living Suite recorded live on Halloween 2013 in London's historic Union Chapel church. This track is a teaser of a live album (!!!) to follow on both Beat and Death Waltz."
Death Waltz says this about their COTLD release: " our release has been overseen by Fabio himself and is what he calls the definitive version ...".
I never pay attention for soundtracks except the one with Tangerine Dream music.
Currently spinning Terminator 2 soundtracks and it's great. I still worship that movie and soundtrack is great.
It's like modern industrial classic. :)

Some of their newly commissioned artwork is pretty fucking cool. I like what they did for Assault on Precinct 13, Halloween II and III, The Fog, and House By The Cemetery. Zombie would've been great if the layout hadn't been ruined by that goddamn blue frame that they were using for everything at the beginning (funny how in the liner notes by the artist, he says how he specifically avoided using blue in that painting in order to evoke the necessary hot, dirty feel). Things like this new COTLD, NY Ripper, They Live, Prince of Darkness, etc all range from lame, cheesy, to just plain awful, especially when considering how there are so many great variations on the original art.
so many years without "city of living dead" OST and now 2 different reissues from 2 different labels.

I'd like to see imagery from the film on the front cover. I haven't watched the movie in awhile so can't figure out what trees have to do with the film.
I may have to order The Great Alligator just for the cover art. I love 'nature out of control' films.

Light in the Attic has Slumber Party Massacre up on their site for U.S. orders; it's clear vinyl. I listened to the score yesterday on youtube & I know I've seen the film but I do not remember anything from it. I should look for a torrent soon*. I think the liner notes on the original LP says something about only 3 pieces of musical gear were used to create the music.
I hoping Cannibal Ferox will start shipping soon; the release date is the 28th, I think?

TNT failed to deliver a wholesale shipment to one of our one stops which is why we have these leftovers. You should also be able to find them online through record stores as they are allowed to seel them 7 days after the event too.
Leftovers have always gone online 7 days after the event.
If you bought off eBay at inflated prices you could always open a dispute with the flipper and return it and get your money back."
I wouldn't mind owning The Perfume of the Lady in Black, it's a cool movie (Kinda like Rosemary's Baby with an over the top gory ending). I haven't noticed anyone in the US selling it at a reasonable price.
The sample I listened to from In the Wall wasn't bad. I've never heard of the film but I did run across a link to it on Vimeo the other day but cannot remember where I saw the link.
It's a good thing I wasn't that keen on the Soundcloud samples of these latest Death Waltz releases, otherwise I'd have to fork out around AUD 55 for each with postage. A record would have to be very-very good to justify that kind of money.
The other day I got Fabio Frizzi's City of the Living Dead and Roberto Donati's Eaten Alive! LPs (both on Stella Edizioni/Private Records). They're both great (although Eaten Alive! has a few tracks that are a bit too normal rock music for me, but they're catchy still). Nice packaging too. I'm looking forward to Stelvio Cipriani's The Great Alligator on the same label; the Youtube sample is pretty good. Apparently it should be out soon.
A while ago I also got Alessandro Alessandroni's Inchiesta on CD (there was a vinyl reissue too last year) which is awesome. Anyone into at times funky, at times atmospheric music should check it out. I've got another Alessandroni, a Nino Rapicavoli library album, and Andrzej Korzynski's Possession LP set aside at a mailorder company.
I can also recommend the Bruno Nicolai/Roger Roger split 7" on Finders Keepers: it's great horror film music. It's part of a 7" series of horror movie soundtracks, but based on the samples, I didn't like the other ones.
It's due to this thread I looked into movie soundtracks recently, and based on what I've been reading and samples I've listened to, I'm hoping I can get the second pressing of Bruno Nicolai's All the Colours of the Dark; everyone seems crazy about this one and the samples are good indeed. I'll have to check out samples of the two upcoming Nicolai releases on FK too, The Case of the Bloody Iris and Your Vice is a Locked Room... I'd like to hear Cannibal Ferox too, although it's meant to be almost the same as Eaten Alive!.
I'd be interested to hear releases on these recent soundtrack labels like Death Waltz, Waxwork etc., but they're goddamn expensive with postage...
The Case of the Bloody Iris and Your Vice is a Locked Room... are both up for sale on Finders Keepers website. I'll have to keep an eye on Mount Analog (my copy of All the Colours... is in transit & it's back in stock on Mt.Analog's site).
Cannibal Ferox is delayed due to backlog from RSD. New release date is the 12th or so. I bet DW's Slumber Party Massacre gets pushed back, too.
Waxwork's releases are expensive before postage! I haven't bought any of them, yet. There will be another pressing for Creepshow but $28 for 1 record is a bit much, IMO.
Yeah, I got the email about those new Finders Keepers releases now being on sale from the label, so I ordered Your Vice..., The Case of... and All the Colours... (since it's back in stock) from them. I also couldn't resist and ordered the Cannibal Ferox tape yesterday.
I usually tend to get bored easily when listening to soundtracks. Very few of them actually manage to keep me interested, even though the films and music might work together well when watching the movie.
My all time favorite is probably Vampyros Lesbos soundtrack (enjoyable even if you've never seen the movie... I dare to say that soundtrack is better than movie itself). Also Liquid Sky is quite interesting... sadly it is quite hard to find for a reasonable price.
I've been listening to samples/parts of quite a few soundtracks lately, and most of them I find rather boring too -- or let's say, they might work well with the movies they're made for, but as music only they don't hold up (for me). However, the few soundtracks I've got so far work perfectly as standalone albums. Just like with any other type of music, it seems I have to listen to quite a lot of stuff to find something I really like (of course, by listening to samples, I run the risk of hearing bad parts and missing what might be good parts).

AVAILABLE NOW: STELVIO CIPRIANI - IL FIUME DEL GRANDE CAIMANO (STELLA 85009)
Previously unreleased soundtrack of the Sergio Martino movie "Il Fiume Del Grande Caimano" aka "The Great Alligator" from 1979. Main actor was Barbara Bach ("Bond Girl" from "The Spy Who Loved Me", 1977). All tracks produced and composed by Italian cult musician Stelvio Cipriani.
The music ranges from deep and spheric electronic synthesizer experiments to mystic, progressive afro drums with fascinating electronic facets as well several discoid and futuristic compositions plus last but not least some typical soundtrack themes. The overall concept creating perfectly the feeling of an adventure trip through a dark green, foggy and magic sinister jungle scenery.
To put it straight these lost recording are a glorious surprise, a highlight for all fans of Italian vintage music and all soundtrack collectors. Obviously a Stelvio Cipriani masterpiece which leaves the question open why this fantastic album wasn't available in stores before.

The Great Alligator has awesome artwork but the music doesn't work for me. I agree with whoever posted that a lot of movie music doesn't work that well without the visuals.
Cannibal Ferox should be out next week &, I think, City of the Living Dead is late May? Other than CotLD, I haven't seen any announcements for upcoming sndtrks that I'm very interested in.
I decided I didn't want to spend the money on the Finders Keepers giallo records ($22 for the 10" & $12 for the 7"). The All the Colours of the Dark LP is pretty awesome & recommended.
I've ordered The Great Alligator as I really like some parts of the Youtube sample. I hope I'll like the whole record cause it was really expensive...
CotLD was released by Stella Edizioni/Private Records (who just released the Alligator) a few months ago; it's really good. That release has some variations of the original music as bonus, while apparently the upcoming Death Waltz release will have a recent live recording of one of the tracks as bonus instead. It's pretty strange to all of a sudden have 2 different versions of the same soundtrack on 2 labels but maybe that happens in the soundtrack world? I don't know.
I'm looking forward to getting the recent Finders Keepers giallo releases and Slumber Party Massacre (on Death Waltz) which I also ended up ordering.
I've received the 3 recent Bruno Nicolai releases on Finders Keepers (All the Colours of the Dark, The Case of the Bloody Iris and Your Vice Is A Locked Room And Only I Have The Key). They're all great. There are some really catchy parts on all of them while others are more obviously like movie soundtracks, but still good enough on their own. I also listened to samples of another Nicolai soundtrack, Marquis De Sade's, but it wasn't my cup of tea.
I also got the Slumber Party Massacre OST by Ralph Jones, and I love it. It's a mix of funny and suspenseful sounds, but due to the former it's got an overall offbeat vibe. Having read about occasional sound quality issues with Death Waltz releases, I couldn't be happier with my copy: super clean, basically no surface noise whatsoever.
Cannibal Ferox also arrived on tape, and it's already received multiple plays. I think I prefer it slightly over the Eaten Alive! LP, although they're quite similar.
I'm thinking about ordering The Beyond and Zombie Flesh Eaters on CD from Beat Records in Italy (haven't checked out how much postage would be yet though). Apparently both will be re-released on vinyl by Death Waltz this year, but while I like the physicality of vinyl, I prefer CDs if there's an option for them.
The problem with soundtracks is usually that they have these few good title tracks (or main themes) and then you have endless amount of "variations" or main theme part 100's and some fiddling which works in the movie but as a stand-alone tracks... hardly. As much as I love 70's and early 80's Italian horror flicks I mostly get disappointed with the soundtrack records... no matter, how luxuriously packaged. One example being Lucertola Media's cd release of Cipriani's 'Incubo Sulla Citta Contaminata'.
Seven-inch records might be a better option since there is a limited space so the releasing company have to make some decisions what to press on them (so it is usually those two theme songs or hits... if there is any).
Talking about seven-inch soundtracks, I really enjoy Jörg Buttgereit's Nekromantik & Der Todesking -soundtracks. First of them being a picture disc

I think I'm finally burned out on soundtracks.
i'm starting to get that feeling, ...i wonder when the soundtrack-market will burn itself. When visiting Londen for UFOI amost all record stores stocked Mondo & Waxworks etc....but 30-40 £ ?
i'll be not repeating a DW subscription, get the feeling they're just releasing for the sake of releasing, curiosities without really being musically good, and the fact DW fails to correct a mishap from >2years ago doesn't help ...

There will be a repress from Waxwork. I think I'll have to spring for it. It's pretty good. Also, FRIDAY THE 13th is coming in August. I think I'll have to own it, too. The samples the label put up are damn good.
Death Waltz released CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD today. I'm waiting for a couple weeks before ordering as copies will not be int he U.S. until next month.
Got this the other day, the masters are lost and previous albums were bootlegs made from the pre-dub video tracks so had some edits and background sound FX in there but this is remastered from the composers' personal reel to reel copies.

These french prog guys are recording a suitably epic cover/tribute album too which i've preordered :)
http://www.parallax.fr/9.ulysse31str/ulysse31str.htm
I've received Stelvio Cipriani's The Great Alligator LP. It's got really good parts (the second track is an awesome funky track with horns and synths), but quite boring ones as well. The same label is putting out another Cipriani LP next month, Concorde Affaire '79 (samples: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-muN63ALJAQ&feature=youtu.be). Again, the samples have great parts and quite bland ones too.
I've listened to the samples of Chopping Mall that's out soon on Waxwork Records and I quite liked them, but I don't know if I'll be able to find the record somewhere for a decent price including shipping. I'm pretty sure ordering from the label direct is out of the question due to high US shipping rates and the label's already high prices.
I've preordered The Phantom of the Opera (on tape, as that's the cheapest option) that's due out in August on One Way Static. It's not a classic score but a modern recording by a band called The Laze. I don't know them, but the samples are really good. Sort of prog rock with a lot of synth.
I'll have to listen to the soundtrack of Creepshow. I've recently watched the film, but the soundtrack seemed nothing special to me. However, I've noticed that movies can distract attention from their soundtracks, so one might not appreciate a soundtrack as much as if one heard it without the movie. I'll also have to listen to samples of the above mentioned Ulysses 31.
By the way, Death Waltz is having a sale, I think till the end of June. The New York Ripper, for example, can be had for GBP 10.

I haven't picked any soundtracks up since Cannibal Ferox. I keep meaning to order City of the Living Dead but it's been so hot here that I don't want to risk receiving warped vinyl after sitting in the PO trucks all day.
Waxwork is releasing Friday the 13th next month; pre-orders started last night. It's one I'd like to have but $27 is steep for one record. I don't care about the heavy duty tip-on, whatever-the-fuck covers...
I'd love to own Suspiria; I think the dvd I own has an accompanying cd.

Wow, thanks for that! Hopefully this gets proper sized edition and good EU distribution. Otherwise I'm out.
Terrific imagery! The soundtrack itself isn't too great, though. At least, if I remember correctly.
Listen to this:

More like '80s industrial than a soundtrack for a fake film . I love the processed screaming.
In the Halloween / October tradition I'm watching as many spook-show style, haunted atmosphere laden films as possible. One of my all time favorites is INVASION OF THE VAMPIRES (1963, Mexico). Watched it tonight and forgot how insane the soundtrack is - tape loops, sound effects that go into delayed effects, musique concrete, etc. Almost like Stockhausen meets Sun Ra meets Philip Corner. Amazing.

wow this is incredible
Got a few CDs on Beat Records: Fabio Frizzi's The Beyond, Zombi 2 and A Cat in the Brain; Francesco De Masi's The New York Ripper and Piero Piccioni's Una Tomba Aperta... Una Bara Vuota.
The Beyond is the best by far, I think; Zombi 2 is also good (although some of the "exotic" sounding tracks go on for too long), while A Cat in the Brain is only good when it has parts lifted pretty much straight from The Beyond/Zombi 2 (all 3 soundtracks share certain tracks), otherwise it's simply terrible. Crappy easy listening music.
The New York Ripper has a great atmosphere. Una Tomba Aperta... is a typical soundtrack in the sense that while there's nothing wrong with it, it simply isn't nearly memorable enough to be listened to on its own. I've heard it twice and will probably never listen to it again.
I'm glad I never got around to buying A Cat in the Brain. I liked the LP cover art but never got around to re-watching the film to check out the music. I love New York Ripper but the music isn't anything I'd want to listen to without the gory visuals & the DW cover art is awful.
Death Waltz has merged itself with Mondo & a new website or something is suppose to go up soon. Also, Mondo is releasing SCANNERS/THE BROOD tomorrow on LP. I'm more looking forward to Criterion Collection releasing The Brood on blu later this year.

NAKED VIOLENCE - composer Silvano Spadaccino.

That's a harsh scene with appropriate sounds. I actually remembered the junk metal sounds as more like dragging chairs along the floor.

Apologies if this has already been posted. Recently i've been enjoying the Forbidden Planet (1956) soundtrack by Louis And Bebe Barron. Great minimal electronics, a little heavy on the "sci fi" feel but highly enjoyable still after all these years.

Another Ennio Morricone vinyl reissue, this time it's "L'Istruttoria È Chiusa: Dimentichi" ("The Case Is Closed, Forget It") on Contempo Records. They started releasing soundtracks just last year but already have decent selection (http://www.discogs.com/label/717571-Contempo-Soundtracks) of releases. In my opinion this is the best release they have put out.
Sample: Disordini (http://youtu.be/k2b-H0wVpnc) (don't judge too quickly, this track has a lot of different sections of experimental sounds)
The soundtrack has been available on vinyl for ten years already but apparently this one is remastered from the original analog tapes (master and sound restoring done by Roberto Zamori at Film Music Art Studio) and includes two bonus tracks. However, looking from Discogs it appears that the first vinyl version includes those two bonus tracks as well and is relatively cheaper. That being said, I have some Dagored releases and their pressings are quite noisy. That in mind, this new reissue could be better choice.
I've have never heard of "L'Istruttoria È Chiusa: Dimentichi". The IMDB says it's a crime film. The marching band music & yelling had me thinking of the Hermann Nitsch cd's Dom America released.
I'd love to see the di Leo crime film music released on any format...

Il Caso Mattei has an impressive sound design and soundtrack. All Rosi's 60/70's movies shared the same attention to sound. Also Elio Petri (my favourite Italian director) had the same approach.

I like the movie a lot but not sure if the music stands on its own for my tastes. Cover art would have been better with an image from the film, too.

Bit of a warning: Mondo is charging $7 for postage (media, I'm guessing) so lube up in advance. I contacted Mondo to cancel & refund. That much for shipping plus state tax is too fucking much. Before paying, Mondo's site read as if tax/shipping together was $7.
So far I have only seen 3 different versions and all of them looks fucking lame. Will probably buy the one that's the easiest to get. At least the CD I have has very nice artwork.

Mondo will be releasing PHANTASM in the near future. Death Waltz has 3 soundtracks going up from pre-order tomorrow including KILLER NUN (sample I listened to wasn't that interesting) & One-Way Static has 3 that will go up next week including MARK OF THE DEVIL.
MotD has interesting moments but I'd only purchase it if it has artwork from the film (the booklet in the new Arrow blu release is packed with killer imagery). PHANTASM is a fave but the art stinks. It's another that needed the original poster art used.
i have to say the i've found the avalanche of soundtrack releases in the past year or two to be completely overwhelming. despite the tasty art on some of the LPs, it seems like most of the music isn't really worth releasing. especially with the $$$$$ price tags on a lot of the stuff.
one thing that has peaked my interest is the vinyl release for the Wicked City soundtrack. but sadly the label decided to go with some hideous art that's truly perplexing, especially when any screen cap from the film would've worked just fine.

"The Guest" was so so as a film in my humble opinion. Not bad but not great. The main actor stressed the hell out of me.
As I was watching the film, I was like "man, that reminds me of some Steve Moore stuff, I'll have to listen to "Light Echoes" later tonight", and when I checked the credits, I realised it was him. The OST should be good.
I'd also like to add that I also find the amount of new OSTs being released overwhelming and especially overpriced. I really dislike Death Waltz as a label. Good music most of the time but stupid prices for cheap presentation, ugh.
I wonder if "Turkey Shoot"' OST is out. It should be an interesting one.

Lenzi's EYEBALL is getting a reissue, too. I didn't notice which label is releasing it.
Dagored is my favorite soundtrack label for sure! Always classy artworks and great giallo stuff.

Vinegar Syndrome is releasing the film on blu-ray next year.
I wish I had time to go through this thread, but I know TX Chainsaw Massacre has been mentioned. I'll try to contribute something else:
BEGOTTEN. That is a silent film with pretty much constant insect simulation and disembowelment.
I also have to say that Art Zoyd's alternate score for "Nosferatu" is pretty amazing.
I'll also second Gil Melle's "Andromeda Strain", the guy who did the theme to Night Gallery. Early versions of the record came in a fold out hexagonal sleeve that I may be able to afford some time.
As for Morricone, I have to say my favorite is "The Thing" as Carpenter's influence on his work is extremely rewarding to me, but also, this compilation of "Experimental Morricone" has some great stuff on it, especially "La Citta". https://open.spotify.com/album/6oD94R5iXIpUAbkb9Kt036
There was an article in the Chicago Reader recently about the craze of reissuing horror soundtracks, some of which shouldn't really have been released. That said, "Surf Nazis Must Die" was reissued on cassette, and it's well worth it.
Sinister (2012) is insane. It is really weird and dark sounding.
Finally there will be official soundtrack release for Black Christmas, thanks to Waxwork Records.

Totally batshit crazy stuff!

When I saw the announcement I wondered if the telephone calls would be on there. Definitely will be picking B.C. up. I hope the piano smashing is included as well.
The soundtrack to the US horror IT FOLLOWS is a pretty good one, very 80's styled, with more than a touch of Carpenter at times.
I'm sure somebody mentioned it in some thread some time ago... anyway, good movie with an even better OST.

LHODES is now out from Vombis. I just ordered a copy from Two-Headed Dog with free shipping.

I was talking in Finnish language topic, but may mention this here too! The restored version of Texas Chainsaw Massacre hit the Finnish movie theaters lately. It was praised by many. I haven't been to see it myself, it's been years since I've been to a movie theater. In Finland, the movie is almost synonymous to the strict film legislation, and this film is perhaps most known to be banned in Finland entirely, until quite late. Even if you hadn't seen the movie, you probably knew about its existence.
Many who have seen this now, commented that the soundtrack was particularly good.
Back in the day, Whitehouse showed this movie at his live gigs and in general, of course, there always was sort of cult reputation. Quite a few UG records exists where samples or movie been used.
It can be fun to speculate what effect this movie's soundtrack had on industrial music as a whole? The year is 1974 and VHS copies and some kind of recordings of the sound must have started circulating fairly early and certainly thousands and thousands of people who are excited about the dark atmosphere of the soundtrack, may have never realized that similar stuff also exists as "recorded music" published on tape, lp, cd...

QuoteTobe cut the music very quickly. We created this great body of material, then we came under deadline and Tobe had to do all the cutting in a night or two. It was very fast. I would have loved to go through every bit to find the best takes, but he had to just crash it out on his own. I feel like there was a much better version of the score that could have been made, but this imperfection became a part of what the film is and why people love it. The source material is all very LoFi, distorted, noisy and dirty. Some of this came from the technology we were using. We were using cheap mics that we would just abuse them running into tape recorders running at 3 3/4 and 7 1/2 IPS. But, everything about the film was very LoFi, so it worked.
There is an interest in finally doing a TCM soundtrack album. All of the original quarter-inch tapes still exist. Unfortunately, we do not have the final versions of anything Tobe cut together, so I would be facing the challenge of going through all the source material to re-create the score. Another challenge I will face is how this LoFi material will translate to a standalone format.

About movie soundtracks in general, I remember when watching MANDY and the distorted synth nostalgia seemed pretty damn good for a movie you can just watch from streaming services. More underground, more dirt, more ruggedness, but also there is perhaps the awareness of making "cult soundtrack"? While with TCM, not sure if they were aware of making audio track that would constitute as music album?
It's been almost 10 years when this topic was active, and also seeing bitewerksMTB was the last poster here, makes me think how much there has been NEW movies with notable experimental soundtracks? Something that ain't just the gloomy synths and dissonant violins or something, but like TCM guys describe, lo-fi and crude soundtrack?
Just saw TCM in theatre about a month ago and remember thinking "I have to own this soundtrack!".
The drone that kicks in after Leatherface slams the metal door is so menacing and really kickstarts the rest of the film.
Good article explaining some more recording techniques and how the TCM soundtrack could be considered musique concrete:

heard tell that wolf eyes would listen to an audio rip in their tour van. iirc one of them did release a short run of tapes of the "soundtrack" that was actually just the menu for the laser disc (the only 'clean' audio left) followed by the full movie audio with chainsaw roar & female screaming still present.
I couldn't find it with a quick search, but it's worth mentioning the soundtrack to
Sinister as well. For a mainstream horror movie, it's pretty cool and out there, all things considered.
Featuring music by Ulver, Aghast, and Sunn O)))/Boris!

There's hardly anything comparable to TCM soundtrack, with some exceptions like Jörg Buttgereit film scores. It's amazing how unique it still is today. One older film, not usually mentioned and pretty obscure before Arrow Films' Blu-ray, is Cold Light of Day (1989). It's about the serial killer Dennis Nilsen. Amateurish, but definitely falls under "rugged charm" category. The soundtrack fits the lo-fi aesthetics and has a Cold Meat Industry vibe.
New scores...The insanely dark Des Teufel's Bad has amazing soundtrack by Soap & Skin. It goes to experimental category but of course feels "polished" and made with talent:
Lustmord's First Reformed https://lustmord.bandcamp.com/album/first-reformed Not traditional film music, but his trademark minimal dark ambient. One of his best works in my opinion.
Lustmord partly composed The Empty Man soundtrack as well. It has some great sounds and at times reminded me of Arktau Eos:
Seen NWN had a 3 tape box set of the Alien film series OST available. I specifically remember Alien 3 and also my favorite film of that franchise having a stellar OST, very melancholic and downtrodden, much like the film, which was very nihilistic and brutal, something the average film goer could not accept, therefore it's hated as a failure in the terms of Hollywood's bullshit popcorn sales and $$$ . The the film had it's follies, but looking back, I think the film was a sort of blessed accident and a brilliant piece that violated the franchise in the most nihilistic industrial no fucks given type of raw approach, because the mainstream FOX company had given up on it, so therefore it was a cluster fuck, or collide a scope of art driven brilliance in my opinion. The score, also brilliant. Think anyone who is into OST anything should check out Alien 3, that film has been embedded emotionally in my mind since I was a young child watching at as a new release on VHS and even today still has some emotional relevance and if not still progressing and even growing with intensity.

This soundtrack was actually the first cd I bought. Haunting, as the film itself.
I loved Colin Stetson's Color out of Space. It manages to evoke an otherworldly feeling.

That's incredible! A nice first CD indeed and certainly a haunting score that tends to linger long after watching the film.
Another score I enjoyed a bit was this more dark ambient piece/OST theme from this "okay" for modern movie, as it challenged it's viewers to think and maybe not modern movie anymore as it was released in 2010, but the film is called Stone. I thought this was a pretty good and inspiring type of score that feels a bit heavy and haunting.

TCM soundtrack getting a release after many bootlegs. All of the long lost tapes were actually archived in a museum and Waxwork pieced them together. Interesting story here:

I really like the soundtracks in Robert Morgan's short films, especially the bass guitar by ZnO in "Bobby Yeah". And in general the sound design in Morgan's works is great

Yeah, this release is such a huge deal. Very happy that Waxwork didn't bungle the cover art with their usual newly commissioned cartoon bullshit. Too bad we're all stuck with that wretched multicolor vinyl though.

I just ordered a copy and was thinking exactly the same thing.
mastered by thomas dimuzio too! thank god they're doing a cd. waxworks records are notoriously a gamble.
Tetsuo, Gummo, Eraserhead, Angst... probably already mentioned in this thread but those surely are masterpieces which I'd listen to without the films even. Back in my teenage years, I'd watch Begotten with Gnaw Their Tongues (take Reeking, Pained and Shuddering, for example) playing behind. It was nice to mix different albums with its visual madness, since so many seem appropiately fitting.
