Title: Comedy
Post by: Peterson on September 24, 2012, 09:58:12 PM
Thought there should be an official comedy thread for those interested. Films, TV, books, comics, etc. Loves, hates, whatever. Post as if it were the "Top Films" or "What Are You Reading" threads.

I am overall most obsessed with The Simpsons and can easily say it defines many of my ideas of humor. Though the show is now an unwatchable shadow of it's former self, I'd say it's still the funniest thing that's ever been on television.

Another good TV comedy classic is Arrested Development.

As far as films go, I have cried from laughter from the following: Boogie Nights, Rushmore, Happiness, Anchorman.

Figured this needed to be done!

Chris Morris: The Day Today, Brass Eye, Jam, Nathan Barley, Four Lions. There is no-one else like him. Not sure how he translates outside the UK.

I also enjoyed Bernard Manning and would regularly see his live shows. Just about indefensible work. And largely incomprehensible outside the north of England.

This Is Spinal Tap is the comedy film gift that keeps on giving. I think it was David Tibet who pointed out that for anyone who has been in bands it's more like a horror film or grim social realism.

Regarding Brit Humor.
Chris Morris is currently one of my fave. I saw everything, but four lions is definitely one of my current obsessions.
When living in UK I was a die hard fan of The league of gentlemen (also psychoville is good, but not as much as the previous effort).
Old Rowan Atkinson (the black adder) and monty python still my fave.

In Italy we had amazing comedies from the 50's to the early 80's, often what you could call "dramedy", with plenty of social criticism without degenerating in political satire like the one we are condemned to watch today. Monicelli, Risi, Salce, ecc were all geniouses

I wonder if any non-Italian appreciate Italian comedy.

A must see is Brutti, sporchi e cattivi. Life of an Italian white trash family in Rome suburbia with an amazing Nino manfredi.

I've been told by a bunch of people that when you start collecting Italian sex comedies you reached the bottom in video hell. These people usually started out as gorehounds.

Italian sex-comedy are fun and has been the erotic education of my generation, basically porn without porn scenes, but the best comedies are somewhere else (and has the same level of naked flesh and weirdness).

I have personal obsession for this man who has been an icon for both genres

Grew up on The Goons, Monty Python, and The Hitchiker's Guide To The Galaxy, so very into British humour. The Meaning Of Life is one of the definitive funny movies for me - "Now have we, or have we not, done vaginal juices?"

Tony Iommi also referred to This Is Spinal Tap as a documentary. I recall hearing someone reading an interview with him saying "Getting lost going to the stage? We did that millions of times!" Mind you, Bad News is just as funny and I think came first.
Mayall and Edmondson always make me laugh - they recycle those type of characters nearly each time, but make it work each time too.

Aust. humour tends to be too regional, but I like to think that Milo Kerigan, The Brownish Bomber, speaks all languages -

Arkhe: I can only agree on the italian sex comedy... I know many collectors that are into this stuff (along with italian disco movies and other strange shit), but I never reached that low myself. :)

a friend of mine recommended the danish tv series "Klovn" - at times its very amusing stuff. it's available for download with english subtitles - worth a try if you want politically incorrect comedy.

Aye. "Murder By Death" is one of the funniest films ever made, but I still think that "Blazing Saddles" & "Young Frankenstein" are the best films ever made!

I am old fart who still laughs at "Bilko" & "Morecombe & Wise" when they come on TV

When I was a youth I tried writing comedy sketches and mailed off to the BBC, but never had a reply!

How could I forget Derek & Clive ~ perhaps the funniest material on the planet.

For some reason I could never get the humour in Spinal Tap (although I am a big fan of Christopher Guest films), funny, but not laugh out loud pant wettingly funny and certainly nowhere near as funny as Bad News. That Comic Strip series was excellent - remember Eddie Monsoon? - but I haven't seen it in years, recently watched the first series of Vic Reeves "Big Night Out" on DVD and it just wasn't funny - at all! Sean Lock's "15 Stories High" + John Shuttleworth "500 Bus Stops" are regular watches + still laugh out loud funny.

Mel Brooks - "Blazing Saddles" and "Young Frankenstein" - two of the funniest movies ever. Especially Blazing Saddles. A movie like that could never be made in this ULTRA PC FAGGOTRY, but at least the US had a sense of humor in the 1970s.

Lots of great stand-up comedians already mentioned...Carlin, Hicks, Chappelle, Oswalt. BTW, I think all of Carlin's classic HBO specials are still on Netflix...some of those specials from the 90s are amazing and essential viewing if you consider yourself a fan of comedy.

I just skimmed this thread and I'm not sure I saw anyone mention Louis C.K. yet. He had already made a name for himself as one of the best stand-ups around, but then he went out and created the great tv show Louie. He pretty much does it all...writes all the episodes himself, directs, edits, etc... It all comes from one guy, not the watered-down lowest common denominator product of a group of writers.

Also don't think I've seen anyone mention Doug Stanhope. He's primarily known as one of the two guys who took over hosting The Man Show when the original two left, but that show fucking sucked so don't let that put you off. The guy just wanted a nice paycheck. His stand-up material is very dark and filthy, so obviously would appeal to readers of this board, hehe.

Two of my favorite TV shows while in highschool were Strangers With Candy and Upright Citizen's Brigade. That might have been the best hour of TV comedy ever.

Quote from: bitewerksMTB on December 26, 2012, 09:43:29 PMWhat's the fat black comedian that died this year or last? He was pretty damn good too.

Patrice O'Neil. I'm not very familiar with his material but he was a frequent guest on that Tough Crowd With Colin Quinn show on Comedy Central years ago and he was pretty good on that. Greg Giraldo is another comedian who died recently and was a guest on that show as well.

A couple years ago when I worked a different job and sat on my ass in front of a computer all day, I listened to comedy podcasts all the time. My favorites were Comedy Death Ray (now called Comedy Bang-Bang) and WTF. Comedy Bang-Bang is improv style with some very funny people. WTF is an interview format with various celebs hosted by comedian Marc Maron. Not as gut-bustingly funny as Comedy Bang-Bang but still entertaining and worth listening to. Some others that I listened to less frequently were the Pod F. Tomkast (hosted by Paul F. Tompkins) and The Adam Carolla Podcast (funny in spurts, but often veers into angry middle-aged guy ranting)

I'm a huge comedy nerd, perhaps as important a part of my life as music and noise are.

So many favourites to list, some of which have already been mentioned.

Reeves and Mortimer are indeed sublime, and a definite key influence on the sense of humour I have now. A great example of well executed weird humour that managed to get into the mainstream. (a far cry from "lol random" utter shit like The Mighty Boosh)

The Simpsons was truly great obviously, anything before season 11 is well worth anyone's time I think. Never was anything so simultaneously popular and subversive. A real shame that it's become the sort of mediocrity it used to lampoon so expertly and ruthlessly. I've heard criticisms of most of the episodes having happy endings, which of course would be required for a prime time family orientated sitcom, but they always had some cynical bent to them, such as Homer crying at his children "both being losers" when they decide to call it a tie in a hockey game, or again Homer declaring he'd learned nothing from media lying when asked if he'd learnt a lesson from being falsely portrayed as a sex offender on TV.

When it comes to stand up I used to favour US stuff, but I've come round more to UK stand up comedy in recent years. Obviously, like in any country, the majority of it is useless crap, especially the more mainstream stuff, but comedians like Stewart Lee, Daniel Kitson, Simon Munnery and Jerry Sadowitz manage to deliver material both substantial and hilarious, that rewards re-visitation.

US comedy unit PFFR are possibly my favourite comedy people ever, everything they have produced is totally brilliant. Clearly some influence from UK innovators like Chris Morris but taken much further into some truly head scrambling genius. Xavier:Renegade Angel manages to be both flippant and profound, mocking new age overanalysis, yet warranting thorough analysis as it is totally dense with brilliant jokes and writing, and presented in a wilfully alienating style to put off those who aren't willing to look beyond the deliberately hideous visual style and ridiculously fast pace. Wonder Showzen is endlessly creative and funny, one of the most bitter and savage satires imaginable. Delocated is the most "accessible" show they've made perhaps, full of very low brow silliness that in the wrong hands would be simply cringe worthy. But it is brilliantly performed and written, packed with the trademark PFFR meta humour taken to insane heights. The Heart She Holler is a shamelessly gruesome gothic soap opera, which I can imagine appealing highly to fans of melodramatic trash auteurs such as John Waters and George Kuchar. Shades of the most disturbing elements of Twin Peaks abound as well, but done in a really camp and casual way. PFFR rule!

A lot of Adult Swim shows I find do unfortunately fit into the aforementioned "lol random" category but they've made some really great stuff too. Of Tim & Eric produced material I enjoy Check It Out! With Dr Steve Brule the most, wonderfully wrong late night hazy atmosphere to that one. The Eric Andre show is amazing as far as newer comedy goes, similarly brilliant late night public access TV feel to it.

Nathan For You is another recent one I've found highly appealing, very original concept and fantastically played. The best "reality" comedy I've seen, the presenters deadpan aspergic delivery fitting the material perfectly.

I'm missing out on a ton but that's enough to be getting on with.

100% Agree. Wonder Showzen was particularly brutal in the way they provoked people during the street skits. The episode in the second season where's it nothing but asking people to be entertaining is so highlarious and cruel. I cannot recommend the show enough. And Xavier.... perfection! At least in the first season.

I had really hoped when Adult Swim was having a contest for viewers to vote on a pilot that the PFFR pilot would when, which was like a Teen Nick style satire.

Quote from: ConcreteMascara on August 19, 2013, 09:18:18 PMI had really hoped when Adult Swim was having a contest for viewers to vote on a pilot that the PFFR pilot would when, which was like a Teen Nick style satire.

Totally 4 Teens? Yeah the pilot of that is good stuff, it's a shame it never became a series, though PFFR are always chipping away on something amazing so it doesn't bother me what they're making as long as it's something. Really looking forward to The Heart She Holler series 2. Vernon Chatman's book Mindsploitation (http://www.mindsploitation.com/) is essential also, the funniest book I've ever read with a simple but highly original concept. There's a film equivalent called the Final Flesh he made as well which is the same idea but with porn companies instead. Really hard to watch in the best possible way.

If you're a fan of Final Flesh, which is a brainmelter for sure, do check out the Mindsploitation book. He hires the shadiest, most inept online essay writing companies he can and gives them the most imaginatively ridiculous scenarios to write about.

I'd say Wonder Showzen is the best starting point, though it's all fairly equally fine I think.

Fred Willard's characters especially kill me everytime: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D421N6xlisg

This outfit are breathtakingly brilliant really - if you look at the outtakes on the DVDs they are just as great as the movies. Amazing improvisational work.

I may be wrong on this, but wasn't Peter Sotos briefly involved in his youth with Chicago's 'Second City' troupe? In a way this underground comedy scene is comparable to underground music. A crew of wonderful eccentric individuals.

Fred Willard arrest details - http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/gossip/fred-willard-arrested-lewd-conduct-porn-theater-embarrassing-hell-article-1.1123550 - he seems to have talked himself out of the trouble in a very charming fashion.

Some random quotes:

Movies which i still like are all Monty Python's movies, Marx Bros' Duck Soup and Blake Edwards' The Party (Greatest ending for a movie ever)

Movies which i'm bored with them are some outdated ones such as any Leslie Nielsen's films, Mel Brooks' Robin Hood: Men With Tights and Dracula: Dead and i love it (especially the last one was awful), Top Secret, Airplane, Johnny English (What's the purpose of a sequel? Seriously...) and many others.

I could see again Police Academy series for only two reasons: Michael Winslow + Leslie Easterbrook

When i look on today's spoof and parody movies, really can't stand them (Scary Movies etc.)

PFFR rule!

I'm almost done watching the second season...it's incredible that something this completely insane is actually broadcast on TV. PFFR stuff is great and usually pretty wacky, but The Heart She Holler has got to be the biggest mindfuck of them all. Glad to see they brought Amy Sedaris aboard for this season, she was great on Strangers With Candy and somehow manages to be even more repulsive in this role.

PFFR stuff is a lot like other Adult Swim stuff...very odd alternative comedy that caters to stoned people. Except PFFR stuff is entertaining, as opposed to Tim & Eric which is just irritating. I do like Check it Out with Dr. Steve Brule, though.

Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer (UK) have a new show starting next Tuesday on BBC. Taking the traditional sit-com stories and re-writing them. It could very well be terrible, if so I will be sorely disappointed as I was a very big fan of Reeves and Mortimer once upon a time, but at least they're doing some new non-game show (in the loosest sense) comedy.

For the unfamiliar (possibly anyone outside of the UK, don't know how well they exported?) The Smell Of Reeves and Mortimer from a good few years ago was mostly senseless and anarchic and, whilst not as black and grimy as the likes of The Young Ones and to an extent Bottom, was very well written and crafted.

For me it would be stuff like The Young Ones, Monty Python, Blackadder, old Simpsons, South Park, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Beavis and Butthead (especially their commentary on music videos... one of the best ones being the one they did for the Poison video, hahaha!), Cromartie High School (especially the episode about trolling), The Whitest Kids U Know, Married With Children, Chappelle's Show (Clayton Bigsby, hehehe), Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and Monkey Dust.

And for movies, Fletch, Idiocracy, Tunnel Vision, Airplane, Spinal Tap, Fear of a Black Hat (the rap version of Spinal Tap), and Happiness are a few that come to mind.

Checked out some of the stuff mentioned here and got into Peep Show, Bob's Burgers, Nighty Night, and Garth Marenghi's Darkplace.

It's no surprise at all that Rowan Atkinson has appeared in this thread (Blackadder was and will remain hilarious, thanks largely to scriptwriters Richard Curtis & Ben Elton) - but Mr. Bean?  Certainly his most financially rewarding character (a fleet of Aston Martin's don't come cheap) unlike Beans' gags: ten-a-penny sub-Benny Hill prop-based funnies.  Next time you praise the rubber-mouth fool for his wit, consider Monsieur Hulot (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monsieur_Hulot).

It's a shame as it started so well w/ his membership of the Not The Nine O'Clock News (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Not_the_Nine_O%27Clock_News) collective.

Oddly, Pam Stevenson abandoned comedy (could her marriage to Scottish comic Billy Connolly be implicated?) and now writes a agony aunt column specialising in sexual relationship issues for The Guardian ...

I was raised on this double LP; it even reached the top ten UK album charts - unheard of for what is essentially a spoken word album.

Speaking of Scottish comedians, let us not overlook Jerry Sadowitz (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Sadowitz) he's a tough man to find on YouTube what w/ his ruthless take-down approach but money spent on a Sadowitz gig is money outrageously well spent.

You can find an example of his oeuvre here (https://soundcloud.com/houd/jerry-sadowitz-dear-jim).  Prescient for the time.  Beautiful.

I'd echo the comments regarding Python's, The Meaning Of Life.  Untouchable weapons grade comedy.

I admit I found some of the Mr Bean skits funny. Nothing side splitting but cute enough to pass the time. And I certainly didn't see it as original - more than a shade of Chaplin I thought.

The Brits do love their slapstick. Even right-on "alternative" comedians like Adrian Edmenson and Rik Mayal ended up paying their bills with it in endless "Bottom" pantos. There's something about one or two helpless yet determined idiots stumbling about hurting themselves and each other that is just timelessly funny, when it's done with the right style.

Not The Nine O'Clock News was good. Somewhat dated but it kinda lingers (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLgeiRO63mE).

I came up with a joke yesterday:

We all know the story of the little boy who cried wolf: four times he ran up the hill crying 'wolf', when there was no wolf. All the villagers came out to scare the wolf away and when they saw there was no wolf, they shouted at him for tricking them and wasting their time, and he'd run down the hill laughing. On the fifth time there WAS a wolf so when the little boy ran up the hill crying 'wolf', he was ignored and the wolf raced into the village and ate everyone, apart from a three year old girl who the little boy raped.

Did you clap at your kid's piano recital?
Heads up!
Stop drumming your fingers, it's rude.
Can I fuck your armpit?
Have you ever changed your own colostomy bag?
You'll still have hormones swirling round in your head, I'd bet you get horny as fuck.
What's the weather like down there?
Stop farting.
What does pussy taste like?
Look out!
Hand me my gun.

Then again, I don't know much about this whole online HNW culture that seems to have exploded (and gone away?) a few years ago, so perhaps it's spot on? Anyone with insight into that scene that can shed some light?

The Great British Underclass - the eternal fountain of...of what really? There's much to gawk at. Watch a million she beasts cackling on Jeremy Kyle, hear them shrieking from down the road, watch the beefed up Subaru's woosh past with a steady 4/4 beat fed by massive sound systems, Stella consumers, VK swigging slags hoping to get fucked down the pub alley, tramp stamps/chest tattoos with their childrens names, fake tans, big ear rings, GBH, ASBO's...

That's the white folk. Then there are the blacks, the blicks. They have poor taste and behavioural problems too.

I love England!

The English language is in good hands on the Jeremy Kyle Comedy show.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXb3xzQVHSA

One of the cleaners at work mentioned how her kids had been invited to settle a dispute on the JK show. One colleague (he's a bleeding heart lefty) pleaded with her to stop them from doing it. He tried to explain that it's a freak show and that people only watch it to laugh at the idiots who are on there but to no avail. She was proud that her children were on TV.

Proof that England's chaviest footballer, Jamie Vardy, was a thief before he made it in football.

Post by: tiny_tove on August 26, 2016, 09:32:38 AM
It just sucks. LOL.
It's a small seaside town with a long promenade and hundreds of arcades, bingos, ecc. at peak times hundreds of people walks up and down the street like zombies showing their flaccid bodies, prison tattoos, getting wasted in the middle of the morning.

hundreds of retired people.

it is the place where everybody goes because of the beach, but the sea is dirty, trash everywhere, human garbage, ecc.

chav summer resort.

and it is just depressing ad it stinks.

there are really nice places on the coast in that area (I love Dunwich), but Felistowe is just awful.

just like so many uk seaside towns.
part of the charm.
just to mention to any h p hovercraft fans uk Dunwich has nothing to do with his fiction
likely it is stranger
and not to forget the 'carry on' contribution to uk seasides, 'carry on girls', a nadir of comedy that had no zenith in the first place

I only saw a couple of the carry on movies and found them entertaining.

which are the best of the series?

so...

to everybody : 5 British comedies you cannot live without (excluding monty python, peter sellers and the black adder... I have seen everything of them)

I have probably already quoted The league of gentlemen (and also Room No. 9 and Psychoville).

Jam is great and Nighty Night didn't get the exposure it deserved. Julia Davies did a brilliant pilot called Lizzie and Sarah (it wasn't puicked up as it was too dark for TV apparently) which is worth tracking down

I love Green Wing and IT crowd too.

Does Father Ted count as English? I mean, it's funnier than death but does it count?

I put "Yes Minister" and "Yes Prime Minister" among the top of the heap. Some platinum moments from that. "The New Statesman" was good for the first series or so. I used to have a dvd of "In The Thick Of It" that I recall was quite good, although not gut-busting as such. But yea, "Yes Prime/Minister" is essential UK funny.

Bottom fucking ruled at first, but some of those live show tours - well, I only tasted them from YouTube but still...

EDIT - Actually, on that note, what about The Dangerous Brothers? Pretty dangerous stuff as I'm sure you'll agree.

Mix of older classics and newer things, just watch whatever you can find and it'll be brilliant.

Alan Partridge (all)
Brasseye
Day Today
Reeves & Mortimer (Smell of & Bang, Bang It's)
Armando Iannucci Shows
Nathan Barley
Black Books
League of Gentlemen (I know it's been mentioned, but it's just so brilliant it needs saying again)

missing from the Chris Morris worship appears to be 'blue'-a TV extension of the radio version 'blue jam'.
this was repeated later in the week with colours tweaked and vocals echoed a bit to be more fucked up when you came home from the pub on a Friday.
the whole series was tucked as it was free of pastiche of TV staples such as sitcom, news.
don't think he could of got more out there than this-bit like Ballard and atrocity exhibition.

Father Ted is 100% to be considered relevant here. Primarily because of its brilliance but it must also be mentioned this is due to its being a channel 4 production rather than an Irish show that got licensed.
