Vol. 8 arrived with a recent order. I was surprised and not expecting it.
We have Stinkfinger, Antihumanism, Satori, and Scum. Representing Finland, Belgium, England, and Japan respectfully.
StinkFinger starts things off, and I really love these tracks. Great energy and execution. No-nonsense, well-performed noise. All familiar sounds, but done in a really classic and expert way. I need to get the recent debut CD.
Antihumanism offers very harsh and distorted junk metal mayhem. The gain is CRANKED way up. Real nasty and vicious sounds. This took me off guard in a good way. For people who liked that Corral Shut – Upsidedown Crossbreed on Satatuhatta, this would be in a similar ballpark. Curious to investigate older releases.
Satori is up next. Veteran artist and an 80s Broken Flag roster member who is still active after all of these years. Satori brings a heavy and cinematic industrial atmosphere. The first track starts off with what sounds like a buzzsaw with treated sounds. Really nice. The next three tracks cover various dark ambient and oppressive heavy electronic sounds. Definitely a vibe shift from the start of the CD, but it adds variety to the disc.
Scum rounds things out on this comp. I see why the tracks were sequenced as they were. The Scum track starts very atmospheric and actually isn't too dissimilar to the Satori track that just ended. They segue into each other very nicely. The track is similar in spirit to the material on the Oxen CD, Like Tears In Rain. More synth work, lots of space, and dynamics. Over the 10-minute track, the work unfolds and becomes more dense and similar to the cut-up work of old while remaining more digital or synth-focused.
Great series that I hope never stops.
