new cd by W.B...seems to be released without anyone noticing it...anyone got it yet?

The extreme music from africa  cd would of been a good idea if it was true  bona fide africal experimental artists rather than just WB under different names!

kettu

havent heard it.

about the africa comp. luckily theres a lot of fieldrecordings from the dark continent, traditional things obviously but a lot of it seems so alien to european ears that its almost like listening to experimental music.

if people listen to martial industrial or whatever those things are called ,they should get a kick out of real tribal drumming.

That mix excerpt on his myspace wasn't very good, so I don't know how well it will be "noticed"?
I don't know is it just me, but to me it looks like more and more people don't really care about this and that guy doing comeback or trying to ride on his old legacy?
When there are many good things to listen to, the name or "features members of.." won't be good selling point endlessly.

I guess it will appeal to fans of digital noise. But mostly it sounded very very flat. Of course, I must say I'll be giving it a try and won't be all out negative in advance, but without vocals, you can really get into perspective how latest Whitehouse was. I would hope the more it goes into using cleaner sources, the better it might be?

there was scope and potential to explore this concept further i.e...25+ live African drummers with Bennett on vocals using more acoustic elements etc ...I will get the cd but as a concept it seems to be running out of steam!

FreakAnimalFinland

To my ear, main problem is that it was distorted by such a modern easy methods.
While the charm of the percussion would be in dynamics, the details of the sound, the way drum is being hit, and which part of skin and so on. And when you apply the standard lap-top maximum distortion and few now already trademark effects, it's just about situation where any bongos will do it and any source will do it.
Whole thing becomes gimmick. Negro influence is just sucked into hi-tech western adaptation, where all the sweat, struggle, smell, religious meaning, cultural meaning, etc. is utterly distant, if not nonexistent. At least to listeners ear. Music someone with computer, driving through few filters programmed for this purpose.
Novelty is gone very soon, unless it would able to work even as sort of document from perspective of outsider. Presenting the sound of african tradition in interesting form. I don't think the idea of "doing something new" or "doing something unusual" is that relevant. More relevant would be wether its good or not. Many unused ideas may be unused because they were not that good ideas in first place.

It would be interesting to extend the topic, or form new topic, about successful and perhaps also meaningful combinations of traditional music (be it tribal or folk) and noise. And moments when it's done with people who relate it or people who just look it as outsider and use it from different perspective.

Seems like comments on this thread hurt his feelings, heh.

QuoteIt's been absolutely thrilling to get so much fantastic feedback for this album via personal messages and some early reviews, it really means a lot; not only that, it's been the fastest-selling record I've ever been part of, by quite a distance. Very exciting. This good will was, nevertheless, tempered by some scathing criticism from the encrusted keyboards of a couple of Finnish noisabilly scenesters. Oh well.

Of course it is no surprise. I recall mr. WB reacted on critical reviews written on paper magazine of mine already many years ago? Was it Degenerate or even further.. Freak Animal mag? So it comes as no surprise, since many artists are sensitive and easily annoyed.
I won't blame him of course. Since writing reviews or other things about noise for 15+ years, it's huge list of pretty well known people who have voiced their displeasure of getting critical reviews.
Unfortunately, not even friends and idols can buy the ass kissing. It will be judged honestly. Some can take it, some don't. Most probably see that it's not merely clueless remark, but for example in case of Whitehouse, I have pretty much all what they have ever done, and followed closely doings of all the members that did something. And the afro noise pieces that's been available, I have listened more than once to be sure to know what I'm talking about.

IF one looks for afro noise that's more interesting, check out new Militia! It's no way perfect, but certainly more interesting.

I'll probably add this to my piece for you, but Masaki Batoh's solo albums (available on CD as a 'Collected Works') at times incorporate elements of drone/noise but are fundamentally very mournful folky music.  I heard this stuff for the first time over a decade ago, and it's still among the most beautiful CDs I own and definitely an 'all time top 5' if I can even get to that number.  Everyone should own it.

I think I have an old LP of voodoo drumming, no idea if it's Afro though.

I thought WB's interest in Africa was all about machete massacres, child soldiers, etc. Does the cd hint at such things at all?

Seems like I was told there was unreleased work by Terre Blanche that used sounds of voodoo drums or something like that. Bet that was more interesting than Cut Hands but we'll never know.

tisbor

more noisy voodoo drums : the rita - headless with leopard skin

i'm curious to listen to this new billy bennett work- are there no vocals at all ?

bitewerksMTB

ahaha, Billy Bennett. If he ever tries Country n' Western, he has the perfect name.
