Whats the current Japanese noise scene look like? Are there many shows, labels, artists? I am completely unaware, and I may find myself over there at some point next year. Would be great to check some stuff out. Particularly labels that I can deep dive.

Not really that current anymore, probably like a decade old now, but felt like a newer artist at that time to me, if you can consider the time frame some what current in a sense, but not sure if he's still active anymore or not, but Yasuhito Fujinami. His work is quite nice and felt like he was one of the more interesting artists to emerge from Japan of the more recent era.

Thanks! Listening through "lotus" now and it is quite good. really somber stuff. seems the label that released it - SSSM is based in Nagoya and has some more recent releases from other artists as well.

I found another label - dotsmark - that has some interesting stuff. Notably Kazuma Kubota and Uncivilized Girls Memory. Plenty of stuff to check out from both labels now and it seems promising to be pretty good!

Glad you enjoyed some of the stuff by Yasuhito Fujinami. He's also collaborated with German PE noise master Scatmother on a project called Entartun, which is quite amazing and amongst one of my very own favorite collaboration type albums. That one I highly recommend checking out!

Merzbow is still going strong!

Indeed he is, I've always been more partial to Contagious Orgasm, despite his more experimental and more ambient approaches in the latter half. Merzbow never fails to deliver though! This is true! 👍

That's a project I have only half-heartedly looked into (unlike Merzbow, which I love).  Any recommendations on places to begin?
