Industrial Rock & EBM

The people from a metal background had their topic, and then the people from a punk background had their topic, so...

I initially got into industrial through the alternative rock crossover bands like Skinny Puppy, Ministry/Revolting Cocks, Nine Inch Nails, KMFDM, Front Line Assembly, Controlled Bleeding (their non-noise album Penetration, still my favourite by them), etc. Does anyone else here listen to (or make) that kind of music?

This is much more my background but perhaps more so the bands that came before who were an influence on the bands mentioned. DAF, Front 242, Kraftwerk, Cabaret Voltaire, Liasons Dangereuses, Depeche Mode. The first three albums by Human League... not bad at all. Shit, even French poppers Indochine played a vital part in me starting to investigate further at age 12-13. Over the last year I've kept coming back to DM's Gareth Jones produced era and I'm blown away by it. Later, at 15, when Skinny Puppy entered my life there are not enough words to describe what an impact they had on the way I listened to music. My love affair with all those bands continues and is stronger right now than it has been for many years. I guess no matter what musical direction you travel and how far out, you always return to your roots at some point.

Klinik, Skinny Puppy, Front 242, DAF, Liasons Dangereuses, Cyberaktif, Vomito Negro, Frontline Assembly... that sort of thing have been very much part of my musical upbringing. Klinik, most of all!

I listen to this sort of music quite a lot still, although I despise much of what is being called EBM today.

I've never been into the industrial rock type of music, though.

First Nitzer Ebb Stuff, Klinik and Poupee Fabrikk are till now my Favorites. Most EBM Stuff like Front or Signa Aout are not Agreesive enought.

EBM yes......growing up with Kraftwerk first, then 242 and Klinik......receiving a mix-tape from my older brother with lots of early new beat but also stuff like Neon Judgement, Klinik, SA42, DAF, Executive Slacks, Dark Day, A Split-Secondetc etc ......that opened the gates to buying HUGE amouts of 2nd hand records from a local shop. Belgium was ebm-heaven lol.......

Being introduced to first late 90's EBM bands like Wumpscut and then later day Neubauten as a teenager kicked open many doors - my early metal listening has nothing to do with exploring noise/industrial, this has:

never reached into the older history of EBM before getting into proper industrial (CMI bands) - even though albums like Bunker Tor 7 (my introduction to this kind of music) sounds like ridiculous dance music (which it is), the combination of heavy cold electronic sounds, the militaristic sound fx, and harsh WW1+2 imagery (real soldier corpses! tanks! mass grave aesthetics!) made a big impression on me as a kid. Hard not to laugh at it now 15 years later...

:W: did have some great moments, combined dancefloor stuff with pretty weird experimental stuff and scapes (& he did release tracks on tape-compilations in the early days).......Bunkertor7 was still great, but with Embryodead he lost is imho......

Is Wumpscut pope Ratzinger's nephew?

I understand that the entire CLOCK DVA catalogue and CABARET VOLTAIRE's The Covenant the Sword and the Arm of the Lord album are to be reissued by Mute soon. Not sure how hard to get the CD albums are but CV's Covenant album is long overdue a reissue on CD. Their best from the "poppy" era IMO.

Klinik is good, but I haven't explored their discography that deeply yet. I read a rumour on another site that there might be a new Klinik album later this year.

MarK suffers from depression but was working on new Klinik-tracks....they get played on recent gigs but wihout MarK on stage.....it'll get released someday. if you love ice-cold stuff check out his PARA project, great lp !

Speaking of :wumpscut:, is it likely that his early stuff was directly influenced by Genocide Organ? The colons around the :wumpscut: name match the punctuation of GO's album titles. Or maybe both are referencing something else that I'm unaware of.

Klinik ended in 1991 after the Time album when they both went their seperate ways. While Dirk became Dive (which was OK but too samey in the long run) Mark carried on under the name Klinik. Those albums are fucking awful and I'll never understand why he decided to do that. The last ten years of reunion gigs, remix albums etc is of no interest to me. I'm not surprised to hear about a new album. They are just one more band in a long line of tired old reunion bollocks. The original albums remain classics. No one needs the rest.

Very possible. Most of the people I've gotten to know in Germany have much the same musical background as mine and overall it seems relations between industrial and EBM are quite close.
