Emeralds - Boring Bullshit Drone Band (American Tapes)
After a late night in the French Market dungeon, I need a calmer piece to wind down with. This recent acquisition oughta do the trick. Debates over whether or not Emeralds should be categorized into "noise proper" can be had, but no doubt that releases like this are firmly rooted in the ethos and sound of the culture.
Starting with the title, story I got is that it was a Michigan showgoer who said this about the band when speaking to John Olson. Hah. Band leans into this nasty remark too, as the release certainly drones for its duration. What breaks the sound up though are echoes of vocal babble percussive room noise (forks and knives? Some small gong??). Application of the terms "domestic noise" or "shitnoise" would be apt here (although the latter tends to be a bit more blown out than this recording is).
Overall, it is a nice way to wind down on the evening. Showcases that even at their most tongue-in-cheek, this trio was capable of producing some breathtaking soundscapes.
