I have a unreleased Ultra song on tape. I was given the lyrics to use & the tape of their version. I forgot to give St. Deg. credit but he wrote the lyrics for "King of Kings" on Indecent Liberties.

Seems like a nice remastered version of "Zoll" would be an interesting listening experience. New details may come to light... love the echoy buried vocals.

Keith I'd really like to hear that track if you can get me a copy. I may already have it, if you can get me the title I'll check.

The Manson cover was "Home Is Where You're Happy", and it was originally intended for an Elvis tribute comp on the Odd Size label. Of course it didn't make the cut after the ruse was discovered. In any case it won't be seeing a release, as it was re-worked and ended up on 'Spray/Death/Ultra' as 'Mullhalde' IIRC.

The box will most likely be comprised of only the 1st 3 LPs + 'Roman Holiday' put onto 3 discs. Remastered, of course.

i'd like to thank this thread for literally changing my life.  i always heard ULTRA is passing, but this thread made me decide to grab the newer ROMAN HOLIDAY 2lp + 7"... then make investments in the aquilifer sodality 7"... then the ZOLL and SPRAY/DEATH/ULTRA vinyls.  i just ordered a backup copy of the 7" - easily one of the greatest noise releases i own.
seriously - for myself the order goes like this now:
DEAD BODY LOVE
OVMN
INCAPACITANTS
MAUTHAUSEN ORCHESTRA
ULTRA

The ball is finally beginning to roll on this long-delayed project, and I would like to get some feedback from SI forum members if possible. I don't buy CDs with rare exception, so I don't know what people prefer with their boxed sets. Right now the plan is 4 discs (first 3 LPs plus a 13 track version of 'Roman Holiday') in simple sleeves packaged inside of a normal 'boxset' style box with lid. My own personal problem with boxed sets is that I've noticed the more awkward the packaging, the less likely I am to pull it out and listen to it. So my questions for you here are: What sort of packaging would you like to see on a release such as this, and what do you think is a good median retail price?

Also the original artwork is out of the question, so please don't ask.

Thanks in advance for the feedback.

You can pick up the original cds for just a few euros on Discogs so if it's too expensive i think it won't sell very good... Me personally, i still buy and listen to cds.

I agree. I think very moderate pricing is best key to success.
Not to focus on technical massivity of packaging. Like huge neat looking box sets. But focus on actual substance. A lot of packaging gimmicks has lost their effect. All sorts of embossed, foil printed, odd shaped, too big, too uncomfortable to storage kind of things. As individual item it may appear nice, but nowadays it really is just one "special box set" among hundreds.  Therefore I think moderate price and compact packaging appeals to many. To just have lots of substance, but not unnecessary bling bling.

Very interesting release, I'd surely buy it! I guess normal jewel case with space for four cds would be the way to go in your case. Special packaging can be nice, but as it was said before, everybody has seen their share of special editions and it doesn't turn any heads anymore. Plus I think that a lot of special edition digipacks are not thought through, for example the type used for Barzel - Born to Destroy Amalek or the latest Vomit Arsonist, where the cd is actually lying directly on the cardboard and you have to leave fingerprints on the underside of the disc and maybe scratch to get it out (happened to me with my copy of GO - Remember). Nice artwork and a nice booklet with songtexts and/or a good share of pictures are always a great incentive, maybe also a fold out poster or some other gimick? I agree with the moderate price idea, people simply like bargains. Don't know how low one could go without losing too much money, maybe something like 25-40 €?

In the case of 3CD and 4CD boxes, I really appreciate the 4CD jewel case.  Wouldn't be fun or cheap to ship, though.  It's unfortunate that all the original graphics are out of the question.  It could make for an easy, pragmatic, yet best case scenario for the simple packaging.  If not all the original information, maybe no information at all.  Do it "right" or completely generic (old school definition of generic).

I only buy vinyl, d00ds.

Intricate/complicated boxes are definitely a turn off if it quickly becomes difficult to put the cd's back in.

3-4 CD jewel cases tend to break during shipping a lot, in my experience anyway, and would probably weigh a lot.

Maybe CD's in envelopes in a cardboard box could work, although I have a bad habit of misplacing those envelopes and end up putting them in replacements that don't match, which is kind of bothersome, but maybe I'm just an idiot.

Super excited for this, hope it works out.

An extra CD with odds and ends would be a nice touch. Or, extra tracks on each CD.

These have never been released on CD before, aside from the original 'Roman Holiday', so I'm not sure what you are referring to.

In any case I don't plan on making this very expensive. Just curious about mean pricing, but I will look around at work and see what we are selling CD boxes for. I know that the Natural Snow Buildings 3CD is retailing for around $18, and the Oneohtrix 3CD at $14.

I like the idea of two double-disc jewelcases with an outer slipcase, but like someone mentioned they are a pain in the neck when the corners break. Right now we are leaning towards the simple box with lid, with mini-LP sleeves on the inner. There will be new artwork but it will be simple and effective. I love the original LP covers, but even in the case of Heemann agreeing to let his art be used, it probably wouldn't be as striking in such a small size.

Thanks again for the input, I appreciate it.

I was just having a quick look because i'm not so familiar with the project (just have the first 7") & saw a bunch of cheap Roman Holiday & Stain cds. Good luck with this project!

Maybe I just missed it but will there be any other material then the music? I.e. interview with the boys, writing about bullfighting or anything else that might add up to the experience? I really liked the booklet that came with the Broken Flag box and a lot people appreciated the booklet we made with the release of the RJF CD.

FreakAnimalFinland

Yep. Even the 4xCD jewelbox thing allows pretty thick CD size booklet... or two. Artwork and text never bad choice. I rather take that (substance) over some custom made neat printing gimmicks.

Would definitely be interested in this. As far as packaging I really like individual (cardbord)slipcases for each disc and maybe a booklet inside a box. Something like the 5"box shown here http://www.locationsound.com/images/reel_box.jpg, simple and not too expensive. Would much rather see that kind of packaging than 4CD jewelcase.

I use to get postcards from St. Degeneratus mailed from Spain & Mexico during bullfighting season. Too bad Ultra is no longer active; it'd be interesting to see what he'd come up with living in Thailand...
