Seems PB is ready to ship his batch of Peter's latest. A tracking number has been provided, in any case; though I'm receiving a "tracking is not available" message when using the USPS site. Could be any number of reasons for that though, so hopefully this remedies itself. Impressive turnaround, though!

In it you'll find an (unpublished until now?) introduction to an annotated bibliography that Peter wrote detailing his long history with James as a friend, writer, publisher and mischief maker. End of an era for independent publishing for sure, glad I was along for some of the ride.

It was honestly moving seeing Sotos' version of sentimentality and vulnerability about a close friend, well worth subscribing for a month to read this and Best's review of the new book.

Although Creation Books was initially legendary for publishing excellent underground material, it eventually turned out to be a complete scam for several authors and some buyers. Jason Williamson -one of the many pseudonyms used by the publisher's owner- moved to Thailand in the early 2000s and took advantage of the country's weak extradition laws to sell his entire catalog, including reissues and translations, without paying the writers a single cent. If my memory serves me correctly, Boyd Rice and another author I can't recall, after unsuccessfully suing Jason, eventually managed one way or another to get all the major distributors to stop carrying Creation Books material in the U.S. and Europe. After that, Creation Books apparently continued to "operate" but was a shadow of its former self.
I'm not in the mood right now to Google all the backstory on that topic, but I'm sure more than a few of you already knew about this. What surprised me was learning that Pete remained on good terms with him until the very end - I had always believed that he, too, had been swindled.
In any case, I'm not going to feel sad about the death of someone who unscrupulously profited from deceiving writers and artists.

Regardless, I know that Philip was also on Jason's side, even with the limited publication of American Campgrounds. Can't remember where he stated so, but he knew outright that he wouldn't see any further earnings (outside of a modest advance, which I would hope others also received) from that book getting published, unlike some of the other doe-eyed hopefuls who joined the witch hunt.

More to the point... who else has received their copy of Instead Indices [from AS]? I'm very pleased with the presentation of it, even as a paperback, but I'm still only a tenth or so into it. Will probably hold any critical/revealing thoughts about its contents until it's been received stateside as I don't think the publisher has even dispatched his copies yet.
