NO PART OF IT

I am a pretty big fan of soul music and funk, and it actually came from listening to the wu tang clan and finding out the origin of the samples.  Wendy Rene (After The Laughter, sampled in Wu Tang Clan's "Tearz") is now my favorite soul singer, since there was a 2LP issued of unreleased material.  Prior to that she'd just had some single on Stax, and you'd have to get the STAX single box set to get it.  But I digress.

My point is, as someone else alluded to, the sampling of hip hop can / could have some real flair to it.  Case in point is DJ MUGGS, 1999 and before.  He's best known for working with Cypress Hill and House of Pain, but I think he worked with Gravediggaz and others around this time.  I still need to go to whosampledit.com to find out what his record crates looked like, but I really enjoy the texture of these tracks.   House of Pain was obviously a gimmick, I have heard their demos prior to being signed, it was absolute shit. Obvious gimmick to exploit the "Irish Rap" market.  But they were lucky to get Muggs.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIUzF9VhPok

Their single from their second album:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKhJXaX2bAU

I also want to add that Method Man's Tical was recorded in a grimey basement.  Their prior studio was flooded, and most of the album was destroyed.  But for some reason, they still went to another basement after the flood, as I recall reading somewhere.  It is alluded to in wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tical_(album)#Background

And I want to add that I never saw anyone mention Das EFX.  I think they had a gritty style and just something straight-forward, yet unusual about their rhythms, I feel like they were the only ones who used different bpms than usual in more popular hip hop of the time.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkqdAqX28u0

I chuckled as someone's use of the term "white backpacker rap", but truth be told, the links I followed that were about being raw and low fi, and cool, I just thought it was meandering bullshit.  I am still keeping an open mind, because I do like when I get a renegade feel from hip hop, but it's pretty rare.

A caterpillar that goes around trying to rip the wings off of butterflies is not a more dominant caterpillar, just a caterpillar that is looking for a bigger caterpillar to crush him.  Some caterpillars are mad that they will never grow to be butterflies.

I'm gonna go ahead and say that all the links posted on this page are utter trash, even that wriggle music video.

I was into rap when I was was little, but it was mainly top-40 hit chart singles sprinkled with "party-rap" songs. Not sure what else to call it

Anyways.. A long time ago a friend gave this album!
He said something like "you're into those serial killer musicians right? here you'll like this!"

Best song is 18:34 "Fuckin Wit A Psycho" and "Bitch Killa"

I have to admit that I'm old enough to have heard Grand Master Flash and Melly Mel's "Message" on the radio when it came out. Saw them live once too.
I was kind of a misfit white kid that was into punk and stuff like Devo as well as being into a lot of early hip-hop. All my other white punk rock friends hated 'that nigger music'.
I've kind of gone into and out of it over the years. There are certainly some very experimental/exploratory artists and then there are the other 90% of rappers/DJs/Producers who just rap about cars, money, guns and hoes.
For a while I did some work with a hip hop act that got most of their beats from some alt-goth-industrial guy. So kind of like Skinny Puppy with rapping instead of methed out ranting.
I've also been to a few underground hip-hop/synth-punk/hardcore punk shows in the bay area that had some pretty interesting results.
I remember one night where this collective Oakland Faders was there along with some of the Heiroglyphics people. Some pretty epic rap-battles and stuff. But what really killed it was the Oakland Faders guys. they were just lurking by their turntables and would interject little flourishes and snippets while other bands were playing.
A few interesting acts;
MC Beans as well as the Anti-Pop Consortium.

Death Grips.

I was into Punlic Enemy for a while in the early 90's. They were kind of pioneering the whole sampling as an art form thing. As opposed to just looping 4 bars of a well known pop song.

I think you have to regard hip hop as not a monolithic genre. There is as much difference between mainstream top 40 rap and underground shit as there was between mainstream rock and underground punk back in the 80's.
It's kind of sad that the surest way not to be commercially successful in hip hop these days is to make intelligent statements on top of a creative arrangement. Now if you just sample what everyone else is sampling and rap about your dick and your money...

So no I don't really listen to much contemporary hip hop. I have a few albums and such in my music library that I play from time to time. Whenever I do listen to current hiphop I'm usually surprised if it isn't garbage.

Bloated Slutbag

Yes pretty lady
I love you so
Since the time we met
My dick has grown
Someone weaker than you should beat you and brag
And take you for a drag

Due to most of my friends being into hip-hop/rap, sometimes I can't resist listening to a french rapper called Alkpote.
Most lyrics are really filthy and absurd, great stuff. Latest album is called "Sadisme et perversion". Unfoturnately for non-french speakers it's way less interesting, but I still recommend checking it out for the global atmosphere.
