Good that this thread was resurrected. Some new titles suggested here I was not familiar with.

No mentions for Italian 1996 Avox - Desolate Land yet. "Ancient PC soundcard alchemy" Very good! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpjvrmKDT3Q

Indeed a very good album! I was just listening to Avox the other day. Definitely a gem in the rough and predating most dungeon synth.

The first that comes to mind is the one I grew up hearing as a little boy, the original Runescape OST
Runescape created a whole generation of pagan-romantic kids - not an exaggeration

Also there's absolutely no way Ian Taylor did not hear Varg's prison synth records when he created, quite possibly, the best videogame soundtrack of all time
His stuff triumphs over the vast majority of copy-paste dungeon synth out there;

I kind of feel like all dungeon synth/dark ambient music is all very subjective in the core of it all and everyone's got their own feelings and opinions as to what and why they like what they like in this particular type of music, which often I feel like these types of music are very different from one another to the next and since this genre often lacks in any lyrics/vocals to give more clarity on topic, it just makes it all the more subjective in nature. For you Runescape is routed in a bit of childhood nostalgia, so therefore you might be more partial to it, which is of course fine, whereth the next person like me who's never even played Runescape has no interest in the OST sample you provide via YouTube. Perhaps, I'm not "getting" the entire scope by not playing the game. I'd argue the OST for Doom tramples all others, but then again that might be coming from my own bias where those tunes stuck in my head from childhood, maybe sounds like absolute shite to some kid today, but those were hymns of satanic atmospheres to me and I still hold those pieces of quickly put together OST tracks near and dear.

Not so purely ambient/ dungeon synth, but I think my coming Absolute Key album "Kevään muoto" will fit this topic quite well: some sort of a BM-esque ritual tribal forest music with drums, occasional guitars and other/underworldly synths and noise. The whole album will be out soon but here is a taster:

Also Wagner Ödegard has done many dark and obscure releases, for example this one has been in active spinning here: https://regainrecords.bandcamp.com/album/ki-pter-2

I have lots of Wagner Ödegard stuff, and especially the more experimental stuff good plus the lo-fi piano works and such. His metal is good too, but despite rawness, some stuff is little too neat and tight compared to ideal BM where I prefer other qualities. Can't name any specific Wagner Ödegard album I'd be big fan of, but the overall feel is very good.

Checked out the sampler/youtube video for new Absolute Key stuff and sounds like it's going to be one of the best Absolute Key releases yet. I'm excited to pick this one up!

Good to hear! The whole album is now out ( https://absolutekey.bandcamp.com/album/kev-n-muoto ) but already sold out from Under The Dark Soil. I will get my copies next week and I'm sure you can find this from several distros too.

I'll keep eyes open and be on the lookout for it. Thanks for letting me know!

Are you talking about Hardangervidda ? because it's a fucking masterpiece.

Zwickau is a rarely mentioned act that made great dark and ritual ambient tapes. The Serpent's Law and Vincit Omnia Veritas create original atmospheres more through sounds than many other ritual ambient releases that tend to depend too much on largely extramusical parts for my liking. The Serpent's Law doesn't have sounds that I clearly associate with perfunctory gestures using specific equipment, which often degrade the solemn, meditative atmosphere of this type of music. The detailed and obscure sounds in layers of minutely changing patterns and drones feel transitory and deliberate.
