razor x is great! i haven't really kept up with anything kevin martin's done since london zoo, not due to lack of interest though, just, i dunno, time and financial constraints i suppose. also, my interests have probably "narrowed" (or "refined" ... ha!) in the past few years, pretty much solely listen to/buy noise, avant/experimental, metal and punk these days. anyway, got to see the bug a bunch of times in the early to mid-2000's and his sets were always really intense (and LOUD!). one time he was playing a mini-fest headlined by shellac, who most of crowd were there to see. i went to the bar just before he started and by the time i was returning to the concert area there was streams of people fleeing with their hands clasped around their ears, all the while he was looking towards the sound man gesturing to give him more volume. i think that was the second loudest show after hijokaidan (glasgow 2005) that i've ever seen. razor x is the only recorded material i've heard that's somewhat similar to those live shows. still falls a bit short but it's pretty much impossible to capture that type of sound on record i'd imagine. all the other bug, techno animal, god, etc stuff i've heard is a lot "mellower" (for want of a better term ... don't mean that in a bad way either).

i used to listen to loads of hip-hop but haven't really listened to anything new in about 5, 6 years i'd say. still listen to a lot of the classics and go to hip hop shows regularly though. some favourites ...
wu tang & various solo, particularly
gza - liquid swords (pretty much perfect record in my opinion) and various
ghostface ... incidentally, saw wu tang last year deliver one of the best live shows i've ever seen, method man in particular
nas - illmatic ... pity about everything that came after but if you hit this kinda high then i can forgive any manner of crap that comes after
cannibal ox - cold vein ... again, still pretty much perfect
ultramagnetic mc's/kool keith ... probably my favourite mc
mf doom ... he was untouchable for a few years there after his reemergence ... viktor vaughn, king geedorah, madvillain, special herbs & mm food ... haven't heard anything he's done since the dangerdoom album though, except for seeing him do an equal parts great/ropey live show last year

dr dre - the chronic ... pretty much regard this as a snoop album though

based on the above, anyone got any recommendations for more recent hip-hop? death grips didn't really grab me but i've only listened to exmilitary. it wasn't bad or anything, just didn't do a whole lot for me. i missed the boat on the whole odd future thing. i like the fact that it's a bunch of irreverant kids not giving a fuck but it didn't do a thing for me musically (probably my problem though, not theirs). except for that hodgy beats ep from earlier in the year actually, that was pretty great. oh yeah, dalek, i have filthy tongue, the faust collab and absence and seen him/them a bunch of times. i liked the records and live shows but don't tend to return to the records a whole lot. last one sounds interesting though going on the description a few pages back
