This is my favorite Bizarre Uproar.  Perfect mastering on the whole thing.

V/A: Americanoise 2CD (Audio Dissection)
My go to thing for turn off the brain, turn up the noise situations. Genre and era-defining opus. Would be interesting to hear what the non-MSNP projects' tracks sounded like before Roemer's mastering.

I think couple things, like Death Squad track, is taken from his own release, and brutally crushed into red-zone. I suspect also Crank Sturgeon, Namanax, Knurl etc may be Joe taking their album track and editing it to short heavy crunch version. At least track names sort of indicate that.

Kjostad - Glacial Lake (New Forces, reissue)

I have been sick for the last several days, so any listening that I may have done in that time period essentially went in one ear and out the other.  This disc is the first one to have my full attention, and it is a great one.  I forgot how much synth/low end rumble is present in the work of Kjostad.  I am always like "yes, of course - birds chirping and harsh noise."  Those sounds still are present here, but much more emphasis on the subtle moments of the project are given the spotlight here.  I think that while Dirge stands as my favorite tape by the project, this might be my favorite "proper album" from it.  Anyways, back to birds chirping.

This is my favorite of Kjostad and always find myself comparing anything else from him to this one.

#9247
Priest In Shit - Virgin Martyr CD (Oxen)

Just in time for Easter! Starts with a local news sound bite about a catholic priest's sexual abuse history with young boys. Boston seems to hold a very special place in the religious sexual abuse pantheon...

The CD then kicks immediately into a ripping, rough, and cagey metal abuse feedback squall of the highest order for 45 minutes. Each track features a contribution from a different artist joining the core of Richard and Sean. They do actually feel different enough where I think it's apparent that there are different contributors while still maintaining a very focused sound throughout the album. One of my favorites of the year so far.

Sounds interesting! I'm going to have to check this one out. I didn't even know there was a new Priest In Shit CD out now. Thanks for making this fact known!

Playlist has been dominated by INADE!

"Aldebaran" CD
Couple of times straight away. One would suppose Inade is one of the greats, but in other hand, it is quite rare occasion to see someone praising it? Or perhaps it just happens somewhere where I do not see? Some of the early works that has stronger industrial vibe to it, are the best for more, but album like this, there isn't anything negative to say about it.
Dark, gloomy, full of somehow "hand made" feel that is less present in later Inade works. That "galactic", occult, perhaps even sinister vibe that is present, is is something I am slightly missing from contemporary scene. Zero need for software dark ambient drone, yet would totally welcome revival of that mythological, eerie vibe of older LOKI, P.A.S....

Nowadays its easy to gather info of someones discography. I suppose a lot of people remember how before discogs, that is like about 20 years ago, when in noise/industrial forums you would have people listing artists releases with attempt to gather information what someone had made. Now it seems almost ridiculous to think one would not know "con-dom discography", or who was artist behind "Ethnic Acid" or something like that. Now when we are sort of entitled to know all information, it is almost surprising when check out discogs to make sure do you have all relevant releases of particular band... in this case INADE, and it makes me a little bit suspicious can I really own just about all Inade stuff? Burning Flesh CD , absolute masterpiece of early 90's ritual-industrial sounds, and in fast leaps Inade proceeds into far more technologically advance sound.
The Crackling Of The Anonymous CD, Excellent tracks on cracking.... as well! I do not own the very first Inade / Dagda Mor tape, but when checking out discogs, I am kind of amazed... is this all? Do I have pretty much it all already? Probably have to check out the latest live CD that has also Finnish live gig material... Or perhaps the 10" or Tesco Disco set!

Maybe its at a point where Inade is just taken for granted as being great? They've always been one of the top practictioners of that kind of sound to me, along with Yen Pox, Raison, and Lustmord (obligatory). Agreed that you rarely find anyone who really nails that sinister, Lovecraftian vibe of cosmic horror in dark ambient anymore (although it seems like just about everyone claims that's what they sound like). Phelios (not surprising he's on Loki nowadays) and New Risen Throne would be two projects I'd put forward as still carrying on that tradition.

Sutcliffe Jugend-s/t (Susan Lawly)

This hardly needs an introduction or another detailed review. But, having listened to it for the first time in a bit, I just think it warrants an acknowledgement of how well these tracks continue to hold up. A few years shy of 45 years old, and the material here can still credibly stand alongside albums decades its junior, if not blowing them away entirely. In terms of sheer, maniacal intensity and pushing of all boundaries, this remains frequently imitated, but seldom surpassed. Just remarkable when you think about how limited and primitive the equipment utilized was. A journey to the very edges of sound and sanity, and whose influence is plain across years of p.e. and noise output.

The We Spit On Our Graves reissue on Cold Spring isn't bad by any means, but I've always felt this was the far superior CD complitation of early SJ.

Sutcliffe Jugend-Death Mask (Freek)

To follow up on that, we have the '94 return. I'm not sure I'd ever listened to this in such close proximity to the 80s material before, and it proved how rewarding it can sometimes be to listen to albums by the same artist in close succession, and the insights it can provide. I think I'd always somewhat naively considered this album just a basic continuation of where SJ left off in '82, with the focus being on pure intensity and harshness. Those elements are certainly there on tracks like "Metal Device" and "The Killing of Heather." But overall, these tracks have a much more restrained element to them, with a clear focus on creating and building up unsettling and schizophrenic atmospheres of dread and paranoia to go along with the noise and feedback. Just as earlier having that context with SJ's past proved insightful, here the knowledge of where they'd go in the future comes in handy, as you can clearly draw a line from Death Mask to what they'd unleash with The Victim As Beauty a few years later. More experimental tracks like "The Best Room" with its use of a violin bow also hint at where they'd go even later on in the 00s.

To clarify the constrast even more, you get the archive tracks at the end, and are fully transported once again into the all out assault of the '82 era, with the ultimate feedback endurance test of "King Ian" being a fitting conclusion.

Zeno Marx

I don't see anyone, except a few older heads, talking about any of the Loki Foundation/Power & Steel artists.  Dagda Mor here and there, and the rare mention of Turbund-Sturmwerk.  An incredibly solid and consistent label.

Last night's rousing listens...

Japanese Torture Comedy Hour - Untitlted (self-released)
What I am led to believe is the first demo from the project.  Seller claims that Tim Morse passed it off to him in '95.  The story is that the lineup on this was fucking around in between recording sessions for Anal Cunt.  The result feels very much like a demo; there are random spurts of noisecore, chopped up noise dirges and some weird guitar/vocal loops.  I actually think a lot of this (if not all of it) ended up becoming the Recycled tape on RRR.  While I was a little bit disappointed to realize I owned this material in a much cheaper form, it is still nice to own a piece of history from one of my favorite noise groups and hear these recordings in their original incarnation.  The label sticker is pretty freaky as well.

Deterge - Unintentional (Fusty)
A more minimal and abstract jam from Jim going on here.  It is by no means my favorite from Deterge, but I always appreciate the fact that he continues to try new things under the moniker.  Artwork on this one is great.

Work/Death - Mulberries Ripen and Rot (Three Songs of Lenin)
This tape might be the best example of Work/Death's mastery of ambient soundscapes.  A-Side follows along a rather beautiful path, while the B shows that the beauty is fleeting and not meant to last.  Crackles appear in the mix; beautiful drones turn to ugly, distorted textures.  A wonderful and thoughtful work.
